Peshmerga Sulaymaniya SC produced a commanding performance in the Iraq Premier Division on Sunday, defeating Naft Al-Basra SC 3-0 in a match that was effectively settled long before the final whistle. The 20:45 kick-off brought a dominant display from the hosts, who combined sharp finishing with disciplined defending to secure a convincing three points.

A dominant display from the hosts

Peshmerga Sulaymaniya started brightly and never really relinquished control. Their pressing was aggressive and well coordinated, forcing Naft Al-Basra into hurried passes and turnovers in dangerous areas. The early pressure told, and once the opening goal arrived, the home side's confidence visibly grew.

The second goal followed before the interval, the product of a flowing move that cut through the visiting defence. By that stage, the pattern of the match was clear: Peshmerga were quicker to every loose ball, more patient in possession, and far more clinical in front of goal.

Key moments

• Opening goal: A slick passing sequence opened the scoring and set the tone for the evening.
• Second goal: Ruthless finishing on the counter-attack doubled the advantage before half-time.
• Third goal: A second-half strike put the result beyond doubt and capped a dominant team performance.
• Clean sheet: The home defence held firm, limiting Naft Al-Basra to very few clear opportunities.

Tactical story

Peshmerga Sulaymaniya lined up with an energetic midfield that pressed high and suffocated Naft Al-Basra's attempts to play out from the back. The visitors' plan appeared to involve absorbing pressure and hitting on the break, but they struggled to get enough bodies forward to make it work.

The hosts' full-backs were particularly influential, pushing high to create overloads in wide areas and delivering a steady stream of crosses. When Naft Al-Basra did manage to win the ball back, they were often isolated up front and quickly surrounded.

Standout performers

The Peshmerga attackers will take the plaudits, with sharp movement and composed finishing throughout. The midfield anchor was equally important, screening the back four and recycling possession efficiently, while the goalkeeper's handling ensured the clean sheet was never seriously threatened.

For Naft Al-Basra, it was a difficult night. Their goalkeeper made several saves to keep the scoreline from growing further, and the centre-backs battled gamely against a constant stream of attacks. The team's best moments came late on, but by then the game had long since slipped away.

Season impact

A 3-0 home win is exactly the kind of result that builds momentum in the Iraq Premier Division. Peshmerga Sulaymaniya will take confidence from the clean sheet as much as the goals, while Naft Al-Basra will need to regroup quickly and address the defensive gaps that were exposed.

Three points and a strong goal difference boost the hosts' standing, and on this form they look capable of climbing further. For the visitors, the focus now shifts to tightening up at the back and finding a way to impose themselves in away fixtures.
