Defences on top in goalless draw

Al Jaish (Irq) enjoyed the lion’s share of possession and looked the more proactive side for long stretches. Their midfield circulated the ball well, and their wingers repeatedly tried to stretch the Masafi Al-Shamal back line. But the visitors defended with discipline, keeping their shape and forcing Al Jaish into crosses that were comfortably dealt with.

Masafi Al-Shamal SC were happy to sit deeper and counter. Their best moments came from set pieces and quick transitions, and they nearly caught Al Jaish out on more than one occasion. The home crowd grew anxious as the second half wore on, especially after a disallowed goal and a series of saves from the Masafi goalkeeper.

Key moments

• 18th minute: Al Jaish’s first clear chance is saved low at the near post.
• 37th minute: Masafi Al-Shamal force a fine save from a curling free-kick.
• 64th minute: Al Jaish have the ball in the net, but the goal is ruled out for offside.
• 82nd minute: The Masafi goalkeeper makes a double save to deny Al Jaish a late winner.

Tactical story

Al Jaish lined up in a 4-2-3-1 and tried to build patiently from the back. Their full-backs pushed high, and the No. 10 dropped into pockets of space to receive between the lines. The problem was the final pass: too often, Al Jaish’s crosses were aimed at a crowded box, and Masafi’s centre-backs headed clear.

Masafi Al-Shamal SC used a compact 4-4-2 out of possession and looked to spring forward through their two strikers. Their midfielders worked tirelessly to close down Al Jaish’s central players, and their defensive line held a disciplined offside trap. The disallowed goal was a perfect example of that discipline, catching the Al Jaish forward a fraction too early.

Standout performers

Masafi Al-Shamal’s goalkeeper was the man of the match, producing a string of saves and commanding his area under late pressure. The centre-back partnership was equally impressive, winning headers and blocking shots. For Al Jaish, the defensive midfielder stood out with his range of passing, while the left winger was the most likely source of a breakthrough.

Al Jaish’s goalkeeper also deserves credit for a clean sheet, making one important stop in the first half. But the team’s attacking players will be disappointed not to have converted at least one of their chances, especially after dominating the final 20 minutes.

Season impact

The draw leaves Al Jaish (Irq) with a sense of two points dropped, particularly because they were at home and controlled much of the game. In a tightly contested Iraq Premier Division, those missed opportunities can matter at the end of the season. Masafi Al-Shamal SC, meanwhile, will view the away point as a positive result. Their defensive resilience and game management were on full display, and they will hope to build on this clean sheet in their next fixture.
