Vanuatu Women claimed a narrow 1-0 victory over Fiji Women in an international friendly on Sunday afternoon, with a second-half goal settling a closely fought contest at the ANZ Stadium in Suva. The result gives Vanuatu a valuable confidence boost ahead of their upcoming regional fixtures, while Fiji will be frustrated by their failure to convert possession into clear chances.

Match Overview

Fiji dominated the ball for long periods, enjoying the majority of possession and creating several half-chances, but they were unable to find a way past a resilient Vanuatu defence and an inspired goalkeeper. Vanuatu, content to sit deep and counter-attack, grew into the game as it wore on and struck the decisive blow just after the hour mark. It was a classic smash-and-grab performance, executed with discipline and no shortage of determination.

Key Moments

• 23’ – Chance, Fiji: Adi Salote forced a smart save from the Vanuatu goalkeeper with a header from a corner.
• 47’ – Chance, Fiji: A long-range effort from Mereoni Tui clipped the top of the crossbar.
• 63’ – Goal, Vanuatu: Lavinia Tari scored the only goal of the game, latching onto a through ball and finishing calmly past the goalkeeper.
• 86’ – Chance, Fiji: A late free-kick was cleared off the line as Vanuatu held on for the win.

Tactical Story

Fiji set up with a possession-based approach, looking to stretch Vanuatu through quick switches of play and overlapping full-backs. They succeeded in pinning their opponents back for long spells, but their final ball lacked precision and they struggled to break down a compact defensive block. Vanuatu, by contrast, were content to absorb pressure and look for moments to break at pace.

That approach paid off in the second half. As Fiji pushed more players forward in search of a goal, Vanuatu found more space on the counter. The decisive goal came from exactly that scenario, with a simple through ball catching the Fiji defence square and allowing Tari to race clear. From there, Vanuatu defended with grit, throwing bodies in front of shots and clearing everything that came into their box.

Standout Players

Lavinia Tari was the match-winner for Vanuatu and showed great composure with her finish. The Vanuatu goalkeeper also deserved huge credit for a string of saves that kept Fiji at bay, particularly in the first half. For Fiji, Adi Salote and Mereoni Tui were the most dangerous players, but they were left to rue their missed opportunities.

Looking Ahead

For Vanuatu, this result is a morale-boosting victory that will give the squad belief heading into their next set of international fixtures. Fiji, meanwhile, will focus on improving their efficiency in the final third, as their build-up play was encouraging but their finishing let them down. The head-to-head record between these two sides remains competitive, and both teams will take valuable lessons from a hard-fought encounter.
