FC Zurich 3-1 Neuchatel Xamax: Marchesano and Afriyie Shine in Friendly Win

FC Zurich defeated Neuchatel Xamax 3-1 in an International Club Friendly on 25 September 2026, using the match to sharpen their rhythm during a busy stretch of the Swiss football calendar. The scoreline reflected Zurich’s superior quality in the final third, though Neuchatel Xamax produced a spirited second-half response and grabbed a deserved consolation goal.

Played at the Letzigrund, the friendly gave both coaches a chance to rotate their squads and test tactical adjustments. Zurich controlled the first half, moved the ball with purpose and took a two-goal lead into the break. Neuchatel Xamax improved after half-time, but Zurich’s attacking depth proved decisive.

Match Overview

FC Zurich set up in a 4-2-3-1 formation, with Antonio Marchesano operating as the central creative force behind the striker. Neuchatel Xamax lined up in a 4-4-2, looking to stay compact and hit on the counter. The early pattern was clear: Zurich dominated possession, while Xamax defended in numbers and tried to spring quick breaks through the channels.

Zurich’s opening goal came from the penalty spot after a foul on the edge of the area. Marchesano stepped up and converted confidently, setting the tone for a composed individual performance. Zurich doubled their lead early in the second half when Bledian Krasniqi finished a flowing move with a low strike.

Key Moments

• 22’ – Zurich 1-0: Antonio Marchesano converted a penalty after a mistimed challenge in the box.
• 49’ – Zurich 2-0: Bledian Krasniqi finished off a quick passing sequence, sweeping the ball into the bottom corner.
• 68’ – Zurich 2-1: Koro Koné pulled one back for Neuchatel Xamax with a neat finish after a counterattack.
• 76’ – Zurich 3-1: Daniel Afriyie restored Zurich’s two-goal cushion with a powerful header from a cross.

Neuchatel Xamax’s goal was no more than their improved second-half display deserved. They pressed higher after the break and created two half-chances before Koné’s finish gave them a foothold. But Zurich responded immediately, with Afriyie’s header ending any lingering doubt about the result.

Tactical Story: Control, Rotation and Second-Half Adjustments

FC Zurich’s approach was built on controlling the midfield. Their double pivot screened the defence and allowed the full-backs to advance, creating width and stretching the Xamax back four. Marchesano drifted between the lines, making him difficult to mark and giving Zurich a constant outlet in the final third.

Neuchatel Xamax defended deep in the first half but became more assertive after the interval. Their midfielders pushed higher, and the front two worked harder to close down Zurich’s centre-backs. The change produced a goal and a more competitive second half, though it also opened space for Zurich’s third goal.

For a friendly, the match had a competitive edge. Both teams made multiple substitutions, but the intensity remained respectable, and the fixture served its purpose as a useful fitness and tactical exercise.

Standout Players

• Antonio Marchesano: Zurich’s chief creator, linking midfield and attack and scoring from the penalty spot.
• Bledian Krasniqi: Energetic in midfield and rewarded with a well-taken goal.
• Daniel Afriyie: Added pace and directness after coming on, heading home Zurich’s third.
• Koro Koné: Neuchatel Xamax’s brightest attacking player, scoring a composed consolation goal.

What the Result Means

For FC Zurich, the 3-1 win is a useful confidence boost and a chance to keep squad players sharp. The performance showed good attacking balance, with goals coming from a set-piece situation, open play and a wide delivery. The coaching staff will also be pleased with the team’s response after conceding.

For Neuchatel Xamax, the result is less important than the minutes gained and the tactical lessons learned. Their second-half improvement will encourage the staff, but the first-half display highlighted the need for greater defensive concentration against higher-level opposition. Both clubs now return to their respective league campaigns with valuable match sharpness.
