Mohun Bagan Super Giant secured a 1-0 victory over Chennaiyin FC in the Indian Super League on 26 October 2026, using a patient home performance to claim all three points at Salt Lake Stadium. A solitary second-half goal separated the sides, but the match was defined by Bagan’s control, Chennaiyin’s resilience, and a string of late saves that kept the result in the balance until the final whistle.

Match overview

Mohun Bagan Super Giant dictated the rhythm from the opening stages, circulating the ball confidently and pushing Chennaiyin FC deeper into their own half. The visitors defended in a compact block and looked to break through quick counters, but they struggled to sustain possession in attacking areas. Bagan’s patience eventually told when a well-worked move opened the scoring after the interval.

Chennaiyin FC responded with a more ambitious final 20 minutes, forcing the Bagan goalkeeper into important saves and sending extra bodies forward from set pieces. The home side, however, managed the closing stages professionally and protected their narrow advantage to keep their title challenge on track.

• 12th minute: Mohun Bagan created the first opening of the match, with a low shot from the edge of the box forcing Chennaiyin’s goalkeeper into an early save.
• 38th minute: Chennaiyin’s best chance of the first half came on the counter, but the final effort was dragged wide of the far post.

Tactical story

Mohun Bagan Super Giant lined up with an aggressive possession-based approach, using their full-backs to stretch Chennaiyin’s defensive block and their midfielders to win second balls around the edge of the penalty area. The home side frequently switched play from side to side, searching for gaps rather than forcing passes through congested central areas.

Chennaiyin FC’s game plan centred on defensive discipline and rapid transitions. Their midfield dropped deep without the ball, forming a narrow screen in front of the back four, and their wide players looked to carry the ball forward when possession was won. The approach kept them in the contest, but it also left their striker isolated for long periods. Once Bagan scored, Chennaiyin had to commit more players forward, which opened space for the home side to counter — though Bagan ultimately chose control over risk in the final minutes.

Standout performers

Mohun Bagan’s attacking midfielder was central to their best moments, linking play between the lines and finding pockets of space around Chennaiyin’s defensive block. The home side’s goalkeeper also deserves recognition for the second-half saves that protected the clean sheet. At the back, Bagan’s centre-backs dealt well with the aerial threat Chennaiyin introduced late in the game.

For Chennaiyin FC, the goalkeeper kept his side within touching distance with a series of stops, while the defensive midfielder worked tirelessly to screen the back line. The visitors’ captain led by example in the closing stages, pushing his team forward and urging them to maintain belief after the setback of conceding.

What it means for the table

The three points keep Mohun Bagan Super Giant firmly in the Indian Super League’s title conversation, maintaining pressure on the teams around them at the top of the standings. A home win built on control and defensive solidity is exactly the kind of result that matters in a long season, especially when the performance is not entirely fluent.

Chennaiyin FC leave with no points but with evidence that their defensive structure can frustrate strong opponents. They will need to convert more of their counter-attacking moments into clear chances if they are to climb the table. For Bagan, the focus will be on turning territorial dominance into more goals — a lesson that will matter in tighter matches later in the campaign.
