Nongkrem SC 2-2 Nongthymai SC: Late Equaliser Seals Thrilling Shillong Premier League Draw

Nongkrem SC and Nongthymai SC played out an absorbing 2-2 draw in the Indian Shillong Premier League on 7 October 2026, a result that underlined just how competitive the mid-table battle has become this season. In a match that swung one way and then the other, Nongkrem twice held the advantage, only for Nongthymai to respond with character and quality before a late twist ensured the points were shared.

The scoreline alone tells only part of the story. This was a contest of momentum, tactical adjustments and no little local pride, with both sides creating enough chances to believe they should have taken all three points. Instead, they had to settle for a draw that keeps each club within touching distance of the playoff places but also leaves a sense of what might have been.

Match Overview

Played in the familiar surroundings of Shillong’s football calendar, the fixture pitted two well-drilled sides against each other in a game that was never short of energy. Nongkrem SC began with greater purpose, pressing high and looking to use the width of their home ground. Nongthymai SC, by contrast, were content to absorb the early pressure and strike on the counter, a plan that almost paid off inside the opening ten minutes when a quick break forced a smart save from the Nongkrem goalkeeper.

The opening goal arrived in the 12th minute and came from precisely the kind of move Nongkrem had been building towards. A sharp turnover in midfield released Donboklang Kharbuli on the right, and the winger cut inside before curling a left-footed effort into the far corner. It was a finish worthy of opening any match, and it gave the home support plenty to cheer about.

Nongthymai’s response was measured rather than frantic. They continued to work the ball through midfield, with Iainehskhem Marbaniang and Banraplang Syiem combining neatly in tight areas. The equaliser arrived in the 34th minute when Marbaniang latched onto a loose ball at the edge of the box and drilled a low shot through a crowded penalty area. The deflection may have helped it past the goalkeeper, but the intent was unmistakable.

Key Moments

• 12’ – Nongkrem SC 1-0: Donboklang Kharbuli opens the scoring with a composed finish after a quick transition down the right.
• 34’ – Nongthymai SC 1-1: Iainehskhem Marbaniang equalises with a low drive from the edge of the area, capping a sustained spell of pressure.
• 58’ – Nongthymai SC 2-1: Banraplang Syiem turns the game around, finishing off a flowing move that started deep in Nongthymai’s half.
• 82’ – Nongkrem SC 2-2: Substitute Wanphrang Nongrum rescues a point with a header from a well-delivered corner.

The second half was a different game entirely. Nongthymai emerged from the break with more aggression, winning second balls and pushing their full-backs higher. Their reward came in the 58th minute when Syiem timed his run perfectly to meet a cut-back from the left and guided the ball beyond the goalkeeper. At that stage, the visitors looked the more likely side to score again.

But Nongkrem’s response said a lot about their resilience. Head coach and players adjusted the shape, introduced fresh legs, and began to deliver more dangerous set pieces. The equaliser finally arrived in the 82nd minute when Nongrum, who had been on the pitch for less than ten minutes, rose highest at the near post to power a header into the net. The celebration was as much relief as joy, but it was fully deserved.

Tactical Story

Nongkrem SC set up in a flexible 4-2-3-1, looking to dominate the ball in central areas while using their wide players to stretch the opposition. For the first half-hour, that approach worked well. Their midfield duo screened the back four effectively, and Kharbuli’s movement caused problems throughout. The issue came after the interval, when Nongthymai’s three-man midfield began to win the territorial battle and force Nongkrem into hurried clearances.

Nongthymai SC, meanwhile, showed why they are a difficult team to break down. Their 4-3-3 became a 4-5-1 out of possession, with the front three dropping to cut off passing lanes. It was not always pretty, but it was effective, especially during the period when they scored their second goal. The introduction of fresh wingers late on also gave them an outlet, though they were ultimately undone by a set piece they had defended well for much of the afternoon.

The draw highlighted a recurring theme for both clubs this season: they can compete with anyone in the Indian Shillong Premier League, but converting matches into victories remains the next step. Nongkrem’s late goal will feel like a point gained, while Nongthymai will rue the chance to close out a
