Újpest B Hold Off Szolnok to Claim Derby Spoils

Újpest FC B secured a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Szolnoki MAV FC in the Nemzeti Bajnokság III on September 26, 2026. The match, played at the Újpest training complex, saw the young home side show maturity beyond their years to edge out a determined Szolnok outfit and take all three points.

Match Overview

Újpest B started brightly, dominating possession and creating several half-chances in the opening 20 minutes. Their patience was rewarded when they took the lead through a well-crafted goal. Szolnok responded strongly, pressing higher and forcing errors, and they equalised before the interval with a stunning strike from distance. The second half was a tense affair, with both sides cautious, but Újpest B found a winner midway through the half and then defended resolutely to secure the win.

Key Moments

• 23rd minute: Újpest B broke the deadlock. A slick one-two on the edge of the box released Zoltán Németh, who finished low into the far corner.
• 41st minute: Szolnok equalised out of nowhere. Gábor Farkas unleashed a powerful 25-yard drive that flew into the top corner, giving the goalkeeper no chance.
• 67th minute: The winning goal arrived for Újpest B. Attila Balogh timed his run perfectly to meet a whipped cross and glanced a header past the Szolnok keeper.
• 89th minute: Szolnok nearly snatched a late equaliser, but a goal-line clearance from Újpest defender Máté Horváth preserved the victory.

Tactical Analysis

Újpest B lined up in a fluid 4-3-3, with their midfield trio dictating the tempo and looking to release the wide forwards in behind. Szolnok adopted a more pragmatic 4-5-1, looking to absorb pressure and hit on the break. The visitors had success with this approach in the first half, but as the game progressed, Újpest’s superior technical quality told. The introduction of Balogh from the bench added a focal point to the attack, and his goal proved decisive. Szolnok will feel they deserved a point, but they lacked a cutting edge in the final third.

Standout Players

Zoltán Németh was a constant menace for Újpest B, linking play beautifully and scoring the opener. Attila Balogh made an instant impact as a substitute, while centre-back Máté Horváth produced a commanding defensive display, culminating in that crucial late clearance. For Szolnok, Gábor Farkas was their best player, not only for his spectacular goal but also for his tireless work in midfield.

League Table Impact

The win keeps Újpest B firmly in the upper half of the NB III table, boosting their confidence ahead of a tricky run of fixtures. Szolnoki MAV FC remain in mid-table, aware that they need to start turning draws and narrow defeats into victories if they are to push for a higher finish. The result highlights the fine margins in this competitive division.
