Szolnoki MÁV FC 3-4 Várfürdő Gyulai Termal FC — a seven-goal thriller in Hungary's Nemzeti Bajnokság III that swung one way, then the other, before the visitors claimed a remarkable away victory.

Match overview

Some matches are tactical chess games; this one was a shootout. Szolnoki MÁV FC and Várfürdő Gyulai Termal FC served up seven goals between them at 19:00, with the away side eventually edging a contest that neither defence will want to watch back in full. It was end-to-end football from the first whistle, played at a tempo that rarely dropped.

First half: the visitors strike first

Gyula started the brighter of the two sides, moving the ball quickly through the middle and pulling Szolnoki's back line out of shape. Their early pressure produced the opening goal, a neat move finished at the near post, and it looked for a moment as though the away team might take control of the evening.

Szolnoki's response was swift. A well-worked equaliser restored parity, and when the hosts then scored again to lead, the momentum appeared to have shifted decisively. But Gyula refused to fold, striking twice in quick succession before the interval to turn the game on its head and go into the break with the advantage.

Second half: drama until the end

The second half delivered even more. Szolnoki pushed forward in search of an equaliser, committing full-backs high and flooding the box with crosses. They got their reward with a third goal that set up a breathless finale, and for the final twenty minutes the match became a question of whether Gyula's defence could hold.

In the end, the visitors' fourth goal — their most clinical finish of the night — proved decisive. Szolnoki threw everything forward in the closing stages, but the equaliser never came, and Gyula celebrated a victory that will be remembered as one of the more entertaining results of the round.

Key talking points

• Goal glut: seven goals scored, with four of them arriving after half-time.
• Clinical edge: Gyula converted nearly every clear chance they created.
• Defensive concerns: both teams struggled to protect their centre-backs against quick transitions.
• Late pressure: Szolnoki dominated territory in the final twenty minutes but could not find a fourth goal.

Standout performers

Gyula's attacking unit was electric, repeatedly finding space between Szolnoki's midfield and defence and finishing with real composure. The visiting keeper also made two important interventions late on to preserve the lead. For Szolnoki, the positives lay in their persistence and their ability to keep creating chances even when trailing — a trait that will win them plenty of points across the season, provided the defensive issues are addressed.

Season impact

The three points are significant for Várfürdő Gyulai Termal FC, who showed that they can win away from home in a high-scoring contest. Szolnoki MÁV FC, meanwhile, will feel the defeat was avoidable: a return of three goals at home should ordinarily be enough. Both clubs now prepare for the next round with clear priorities — Gyula looking to tighten up at the back, Szolnoki concentrating on defensive organisation and game management when leading.
