Puskás Akadémia FC secured a valuable 1-0 away victory over Újpest FC in the Hungary Fizz Liga on October 18, 2026, with a composed second-half finish settling a tight contest at the Szusza Ferenc Stadion. The win keeps Puskás Akadémia in the title conversation, while Újpest were left to rue a lack of cutting edge in front of goal.

Match overview

The first half was a cagey affair. Újpest tried to impose themselves early, using the width of the pitch and looking to stretch Puskás Akadémia’s back four. The visitors, however, were well drilled and refused to be pulled out of shape. They pressed intelligently in midfield and limited Újpest to speculative efforts from distance.

The breakthrough came in the 57th minute. Puskás Akadémia won the ball high up the pitch, moved it quickly through the middle, and released Márton Kovács into the penalty area. The striker took one touch to steady himself before sliding a low finish beyond the goalkeeper. Újpest responded with urgency and pushed numbers forward, but Puskás Akadémia defended their box with maturity and composure.

Key moments

• 57th minute: Márton Kovács finishes a swift counter-attack to give Puskás Akadémia a 1-0 lead.
• 69th minute: Újpest’s best opportunity is headed wide from a promising corner.
• 84th minute: The Puskás Akadémia goalkeeper produces a sharp reflex save to preserve the clean sheet.

Tactical story

Puskás Akadémia’s approach was built on discipline and transition. They allowed Újpest to have the ball in harmless areas, then looked to spring forward through quick combinations in midfield. The visitors’ midfield block was compact, and their ability to win second balls gave them control of the game’s rhythm, especially after taking the lead.

Újpest enjoyed more possession but lacked penetration. Their wide players delivered several crosses, yet the Puskás Akadémia centre-backs dealt with them comfortably. The home side’s best moments came from set pieces, but they could not find the finishing touch. As the match wore on, Újpest’s passing became more hurried, and Puskás Akadémia’s game management saw them through.

Standout performers

Kovács was the match-winner, but the Puskás Akadémia goalkeeper was equally important. His late save denied Újpest a share of the spoils and underlined why the visitors have been so difficult to break down this season. The midfield anchor also impressed, screening the back four and distributing calmly under pressure.

For Újpest, the central defender was a steady presence and won several important duels. The captain tried to drive the team forward from midfield, but too many attacks broke down in the final third. It was a night of effort without reward for the home side.

Season impact

The result keeps Puskás Akadémia FC firmly in the upper reaches of the Fizz Liga standings and reinforces their reputation as one of the league’s most organised sides. Újpest FC remain in the lower half of the table and will need to convert possession into goals if they are to climb away from trouble. For Puskás Akadémia, it was another example of winning without dominating the ball — a trait that could prove decisive in the title race.
