Matav Sopron MFC Beat Szolnoki MAV FC 3-0 to Advance in Hungary Cup

Matav Sopron MFC delivered a composed and ruthless home performance to defeat Szolnoki MAV FC 3-0 in the Hungary Cup on 29 October 2026. The result gave Sopron a clear knockout victory, a clean sheet, and a place in the next round of the competition, while Szolnoki MAV FC were left to reflect on a night when they struggled to turn defensive resilience into attacking threat.

From the opening exchanges, Matav Sopron MFC looked the more assertive side. They moved the ball quickly through midfield, stretched the visitors with wide overlaps, and forced Szolnoki MAV FC into a deep defensive shape. The home team’s pressure eventually told, and once the first goal arrived, the match settled into a pattern that suited Sopron perfectly.

Match overview

Sopron controlled possession without becoming careless, and their midfield pairing consistently won second balls in the central areas. Szolnoki MAV FC attempted to counter through quick transitions, but the final pass was often rushed or intercepted before it could reach the forward line. The visitors defended in numbers and made the first half competitive, yet they were gradually pushed further back as Sopron increased the tempo after the interval.

The second half was where the cup tie truly turned. Sopron added a second goal early in the period, giving themselves breathing room, and then managed the game maturely. Rather than chasing more goals recklessly, they kept their shape, limited Szolnoki’s set-piece opportunities, and added a third late on through a counter-attacking move that reflected their superiority on the night.

Key moments

• 18th minute: Matav Sopron MFC took the lead when Bence Kovács collected a pass on the edge of the area and guided a low finish into the corner after good build-up play from Máté Szalai.
• 41st minute: Szolnoki MAV FC goalkeeper Gábor Varga made a strong save to deny Dávid Németh from close range, keeping the score at 1-0 heading into half-time.
• 54th minute: Sopron doubled their advantage when Dávid Németh headed home from an Ákos Tóth corner, rewarding the home side’s pressure after the restart.
• 78th minute: Substitute Levente Farkas sealed the win with a calm finish on the break, finishing off a move that began with a turnover in midfield.

Those moments told the story of the match: Sopron were sharper in the decisive areas, more efficient from set pieces, and able to call on substitutes who maintained the intensity. Szolnoki MAV FC had brief spells of resistance, but they never found a sustained route back into the contest.

Tactical story

Matav Sopron MFC lined up with an aggressive 4-2-3-1 shape that allowed their full-backs to push high and create overloads on the flanks. Their two central midfielders dictated the rhythm, switching play when Szolnoki’s block became too compact and pressing aggressively whenever the visitors tried to play out from the back. That approach forced Szolnoki into long clearances and reduced their ability to build momentum.

Szolnoki MAV FC, by contrast, sat in a deeper 5-4-1 structure and looked to absorb pressure before breaking quickly. The plan worked in patches, particularly during the first half-hour, but the visitors struggled to keep possession long enough to relieve pressure. Once Sopron scored the second goal, Szolnoki had to commit more players forward, which opened the space that eventually led to the third goal.

Standout players

Bence Kovács was central to Sopron’s attacking play, not only for his opening goal but also for his movement between the lines. Dávid Németh’s header effectively broke Szolnoki’s resistance, while Ákos Tóth’s delivery from set pieces was a constant threat. Goalkeeper Péter Balogh deserved credit for a composed clean-sheet performance, dealing comfortably with the few shots that reached him.

For Szolnoki MAV FC, goalkeeper Gábor Varga was arguably their best performer. He made several saves that kept the score respectable, especially in the first half, and could not be blamed for any of the three goals. The visitors also received a disciplined display from their central defenders, but the team lacked the attacking spark needed to trouble Sopron consistently.

What the result means

The 3-0 win sends Matav Sopron MFC into the next round of the Hungary Cup with confidence and a welcome clean sheet. Cup football rewards teams that combine patience with ruthlessness, and Sopron showed both qualities in this performance. They will now look to carry that momentum into their league schedule, where the same level of control and clinical finishing will be important.

For Szolnoki MAV FC, the focus shifts quickly to domestic league commitments. A cup exit is always disappointing,
