UNIFUT Antigua Women Come From Behind to Beat Xelaju MC 2-1

UNIFUT Antigua Women produced a composed comeback to defeat Xelaju MC (W) 2-1 in the Guatemala Women’s Liga Nacional on October 19. After falling behind early, the visitors took control of midfield, equalized before half-time, and found the winner in the second half to secure an important away victory.

Match Overview

Xelaju MC started brightly and took the lead with a quick counterattack, catching UNIFUT Antigua high up the pitch. The home side defended deep after scoring, looking to protect their advantage and threaten on the break. But UNIFUT Antigua remained patient, kept moving the ball through midfield, and gradually pinned Xelaju back.

The equalizer arrived before the interval after a sustained spell of possession. UNIFUT’s midfield found space between the lines, and a well-timed run into the box produced a calm finish. The visitors carried that momentum into the second half, controlling territory and creating the better chances before scoring the decisive goal.

Key Moments

• Xelaju take the lead: A fast break down the right ended with a low shot that beat the UNIFUT goalkeeper.
• UNIFUT equalize: A patient passing move opened the defense, and the midfielder’s finish leveled the score before half-time.
• Xelaju’s goalkeeper keeps it level: A strong save from a close-range effort denied UNIFUT the lead early in the second half.
• UNIFUT winner: A cross from the left was met by a forward’s header, giving the visitors the lead they deserved.

Tactical Story

UNIFUT Antigua’s comeback was built on midfield control. The visitors adjusted their shape to close the space Xelaju had exploited in the opening minutes, and their passing became more patient and purposeful. By moving the ball quickly from side to side, UNIFUT forced Xelaju’s defensive block to shift repeatedly, creating gaps for late runners.

Xelaju remained dangerous on the counter but saw less of the ball as the match wore on. The home side defended with commitment, but the constant pressure eventually told. UNIFUT’s ability to sustain attacks and recycle possession in the final third made the difference.

Standout Performers

UNIFUT Antigua’s central midfielder was the engine of the comeback, linking play and finding pockets of space throughout. The forward who scored the winner showed excellent movement and timing in the box. Xelaju’s goalkeeper deserved credit for keeping the match close with several important saves, while the home side’s opening goalscorer was their most threatening attacker.

What the Result Means

The win keeps UNIFUT Antigua Women firmly in the title conversation and underlines their ability to respond after conceding first. For Xelaju MC, the defeat is a frustrating one because they started well and led early, but they could not maintain enough control against a team that grew stronger as the game progressed. UNIFUT’s second-half performance was the difference between a single point and a valuable three.
