Panathinaikos Women 4-0 Pyrgos AFC (W) — Panathinaikos Women produced a ruthless attacking display to thrash Pyrgos AFC 4-0 in the Greek Women's Super League on Saturday, 19 September 2026, extending their impressive run of form in emphatic style.

The victory cements Panathinaikos’ position among the title contenders, while Pyrgos AFC remain rooted in the lower half of the table after a chastening evening in Athens. Four unanswered goals, scored across both halves, underlined the gulf in class between the two sides.

Match Overview

Panathinaikos started on the front foot and needed just 11 minutes to break the deadlock, with a slick passing move ending in a composed finish from inside the penalty area. The hosts doubled their lead before the half-hour mark, capitalising on a defensive error to race clear and slot the ball past the goalkeeper. Pyrgos struggled to keep possession and were forced deeper and deeper as the first half wore on.

The second half followed a similar pattern. Panathinaikos added a third shortly after the restart with a stunning strike from the edge of the box, and the fourth arrived in the 74th minute after a period of sustained pressure. Pyrgos, to their credit, never stopped working, but they were comprehensively outplayed in every department.

Tactical Story

Panathinaikos lined up in a 4-3-3, using their wide players to stretch Pyrgos’ defence and creating overloads in the final third. Their high press forced numerous turnovers, and they consistently won the ball back in dangerous areas. Pyrgos attempted to sit deep and counter, but their transitions were too slow, and they struggled to get their strikers into the game. The midfield battle was one-sided, with Panathinaikos dominating possession and dictating the rhythm from start to finish.

Standout Players

Panathinaikos’ attacking quartet were all outstanding. Eleni Papadopoulou scored twice and was a constant menace with her movement and finishing. Maria Georgiou ran the midfield, providing two assists and controlling the tempo. Winger Katerina Dimitriou was electric down the right, while centre-back Sophia Nikolaou was a rock at the back, snuffing out Pyrgos’ rare counter-attacks. For Pyrgos, goalkeeper Anna Vasileiou made several saves to keep the score respectable, and captain Ioanna Christou worked tirelessly in midfield despite the scoreline.

Season Impact

The three points keep Panathinaikos Women firmly in the hunt for the Greek Women's Super League title, and the margin of victory will boost their goal difference significantly. Pyrgos AFC, meanwhile, remain in a relegation battle and will need to regroup quickly. Panathinaikos next face a tricky away fixture, while Pyrgos have a crucial home game against a fellow struggler. On this evidence, Panathinaikos look capable of challenging for honours, and their attacking firepower makes them a team no one will want to face in the coming weeks.
