Niki Volou 0-3 Asteras Aktor: The Super League side produced a professional display to book their place in the next round of the Greek Cup, winning comfortably at the Panthessaliko Stadium on Wednesday, 16 September 2026. A three-goal second-half burst ended any hopes of a cup upset.

Match Overview

Niki Volou, of Super League 2, entered this Greek Cup tie with hopes of causing an upset against top-flight opposition. For the opening half-hour, they matched Asteras Aktor in terms of effort and organisation, defending deep and looking to counter. However, the visitors' superior quality eventually told. Asteras Aktor controlled possession, created the better chances, and once they took the lead, they never looked back. The second half was one-way traffic, with the Super League side adding two more goals to seal a convincing victory.

Key Moments

• 22nd minute – Asteras 1-0: Kostas Papanikolaou received the ball on the right wing, cut inside, and curled a left-footed shot into the far corner.
• 58th minute – Asteras 2-0: Dimitris Stavropoulos doubled the lead with a powerful header from a corner, rising above the Niki Volou defence.
• 81st minute – Asteras 3-0: Thanasis Dinas completed the scoring, finishing off a swift counter-attack with a low drive past the goalkeeper.

Tactical Story

Niki Volou lined up in a 5-3-2 formation, hoping to frustrate their opponents with a deep defensive block and quick transitions. For the first 20 minutes, the plan worked reasonably well, but Asteras Aktor's patient build-up play and movement off the ball began to create gaps. The visitors used a 4-3-3 system, with their wingers hugging the touchline to stretch the Niki Volou back five. Once Papanikolaou scored the opener, the home side had to push forward, which only played into Asteras's hands. The second goal from a set-piece effectively ended the contest, and the third was a clinical counter-attacking finish.

Standout Players

Kostas Papanikolaou was the architect of the win, scoring a brilliant opening goal and constantly troubling the Niki Volou defence with his dribbling. Dimitris Stavropoulos was dominant in the air at both ends of the pitch, while Thanasis Dinas capped a lively cameo with a well-taken goal. For Niki Volou, goalkeeper Vasilis Sourlis made several smart saves to keep the score respectable, but he was ultimately overwhelmed by the quality of the opposition.

Season Impact

The win sends Asteras Aktor into the next round of the Greek Cup, where they will be confident of mounting a serious challenge. For Niki Volou, the focus now shifts back to Super League 2, where they will look to use their league campaign to build momentum. The cup run may be over, but the experience of facing top-flight opposition will serve them well in the coming months.
