Debibi United secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Bibiani Gold Stars in the Ghana Premier League, with Ibrahim Sulemana’s second-half strike and a late penalty save sealing all three points.

On a night when margins were always going to matter, Debibi United showed the kind of discipline and concentration that turns narrow home fixtures into valuable wins. Bibiani Gold Stars had their moments, particularly after falling behind, but they were denied by a combination of wasteful finishing and inspired goalkeeping.

Match overview

The first half was a cagey affair. Both sides prioritised defensive solidity, and clear chances were scarce. Debibi United looked to press aggressively in short bursts, while Gold Stars tried to build patiently from the back. The visitors had slightly more possession but struggled to find pockets of space between Debibi’s midfield and defence.

The breakthrough came in the 57th minute. A quick turnover in midfield released Sulemana on the edge of the box, and the forward shifted the ball onto his right foot before firing a low shot across the goalkeeper and into the far corner.

Gold Stars responded well and were handed a golden opportunity to equalise in the 73rd minute when they were awarded a penalty. But Debibi United’s goalkeeper guessed correctly, diving to his left to push the spot-kick away and preserve the lead.

Key moments

• 22’ — A speculative Gold Stars effort flashes wide as the visitors begin to settle.
• 57’ — Ibrahim Sulemana scores a composed low finish to put Debibi United ahead.
• 73’ — Debibi United’s goalkeeper saves a penalty to keep the score at 1-0.
• 81’ — Gold Stars head a corner just over the bar.
• 90+4’ — A final Gold Stars cross is cleared as Debibi United hold on.

Tactical story

Debibi United’s 4-4-2 block was compact and difficult to break down. They conceded territory at times but protected the central areas well, forcing Gold Stars into crosses that were comfortably defended. When Debibi won the ball, they looked to transition quickly through Sulemana and their lively wide midfielders.

Gold Stars will feel they did enough to earn a point. They moved the ball well in the second half and created enough set-piece situations to trouble the home defence. The missed penalty, however, proved the defining moment of their evening.

Standout performers

Sulemana’s match-winning goal was the highlight of a tireless display, while Debibi United’s goalkeeper earned hero status with the penalty save and a commanding presence in the air. In defence, the centre-back partnership dealt with long periods of pressure. For Gold Stars, the midfield controller was their most consistent performer, constantly looking to switch play and create openings.

Season impact

The three points give Debibi United a valuable home win and another clean sheet to build on. For Bibiani Gold Stars, the defeat is a frustrating one, especially given the penalty opportunity, but their overall performance offered encouragement. In a league where away points are precious, they will need to convert such moments if they are to climb the standings.
