SGS Essen W produced a ruthless display to defeat Schalke (W) 4-1 in the German Women's Cup on 27 September 2026. The higher-tier side showed their quality with a dominant first-half performance, effectively ending the contest before the hour mark and booking their place in the next round.

Match Overview

SGS Essen wasted little time asserting their authority, scoring inside the first five minutes and never looking back. Schalke (W), who compete in a lower division, struggled to cope with Essen’s pace and precision in the final third. By half-time, the visitors had already established a comfortable lead. A third goal early in the second half ended any faint hopes of a comeback, and although Schalke grabbed a late consolation, Essen added a fourth to complete the scoring. The gulf in class was evident, but Schalke deserve credit for fighting until the final whistle.

Key Moments

• 5' – Goal: SGS Essen open the scoring with a clinical finish after a swift counter.
• 28' – Goal: A well-placed shot from outside the box doubles the lead.
• 51' – Goal: Essen make it 3-0 shortly after the restart, effectively sealing the tie.
• 78' – Goal: A fourth goal arrives from a set-piece, underlining Essen’s dominance.
• 85' – Goal: Schalke (W) score a consolation goal to give the home fans something to cheer.

Tactical Story

SGS Essen lined up with a high press and quick vertical passing, which overwhelmed Schalke’s midfield. The visitors constantly switched play from flank to flank, creating overloads and forcing the Schalke defence into hurried clearances. Schalke tried to sit deep and counter, but their transitions were too slow, and they were often caught out of position. In the second half, Essen managed the game intelligently, conserving energy while still creating chances. Schalke’s late goal came from a rare moment of sustained pressure, but it was merely a consolation on a difficult evening.

Standout Players

SGS Essen’s attacking trio was in devastating form, with two players scoring and another providing two assists. Their central midfielder controlled the tempo and won the ball back repeatedly. For Schalke (W), the goalkeeper made several saves to prevent a heavier defeat, and the young forward who scored the late goal showed promising composure. The home side’s captain worked tirelessly in midfield, but the step up in quality proved too much.

Season Impact

For SGS Essen, this victory keeps their German Women's Cup campaign alive and reinforces their reputation as a side capable of going deep in the competition. They will now await the draw for the next round with confidence. Schalke (W) exit the cup but can focus on their league campaign, where they will hope to use this experience to improve. The result also highlights the gap between the top tiers of German women’s football and the lower divisions, but Schalke’s late goal at least gave their supporters a moment to remember.
