SC Freiburg Women 1-2 Bayer Leverkusen Women: Leverkusen Edge Frauen-Bundesliga Contest

Bayer Leverkusen Women secured a 2-1 away victory over SC Freiburg Women on 20 September 2026 in the German Frauen-Bundesliga. In a match of high intensity and fine margins, Leverkusen's cutting edge in the final third proved decisive.

Leverkusen began the game on the front foot, pressing Freiburg's defence and forcing turnovers in dangerous areas. Their early pressure paid off when a quick exchange on the edge of the box opened space for a shot that found the bottom corner. Freiburg responded with composure, gradually playing their way into the match. Their passing improved, and they began to find space between Leverkusen's midfield and defence.

Freiburg fight back

The equaliser arrived before half-time. Freiburg worked the ball wide, delivered an inviting cross, and the attacker met it with a header that gave the goalkeeper no chance. At 1-1, the game was finely balanced, and both teams had spells of control after the break. Freiburg pushed for a second, while Leverkusen looked dangerous on the counter.

The winning goal came in the second half, and it was a model of Leverkusen's efficiency. A quick transition, a well-timed run, and a composed finish restored their lead. Freiburg threw players forward in the closing stages, but Leverkusen's defence held firm, clearing crosses and blocking shots to protect the three points.

Tactical story

Leverkusen's game plan was built on pressing and quick vertical passes. They aimed to win the ball high and attack before Freiburg's defence could set. Freiburg, meanwhile, tried to build patiently from the back and use their wide players to create crossing opportunities. The contrast made for an engaging tactical battle, with Leverkusen's transitions ultimately proving more decisive.

Freiburg will feel they deserved more from the game, especially given their second-half pressure. But Leverkusen's ability to score at key moments was the difference.

Standout performers

• Leverkusen's forward line: Sharp in transition and clinical with their chances.
• Freiburg's wide players: Delivered quality service and caused problems in the box.
• Leverkusen's goalkeeper: Made important saves as Freiburg pushed late.
• Freiburg's midfield: Controlled long spells but could not find a late equaliser.

For SC Freiburg Women, the narrow defeat is a frustrating result, but their performance showed they can compete with strong opposition.
