Uerdingen KFC 05 1-2 SSVg Velbert — the visitors came from behind to win at the Grotenburg on 3 October 2026, inflicting a frustrating defeat on KFC Uerdingen in the fifth tier of German football.

A famous old ground, a painful night

KFC Uerdingen, a club with a Bundesliga past and a DFB-Pokal triumph in its trophy cabinet, know better than most how much a home defeat stings. For an hour, that history looked like it might carry them to a routine victory. Instead, SSVg Velbert produced a composed, disciplined comeback to take all three points back to the Niederberg.

The loss leaves Uerdingen searching for consistency in a division where former glories offer no protection. Velbert, by contrast, will view this as one of the most satisfying results of their season so far: an away win at the Grotenburg is a result every club in the league circles on the calendar.

Key moments

• 22' — KFC Uerdingen: The hosts took the lead from the penalty spot, converted confidently after a foul on the edge of the area.
• 55' — SSVg Velbert: The equaliser came from a patient move down the right, the ball squared across the box and finished from twelve yards.
• 79' — SSVg Velbert: The winner arrived on the counter, with Uerdingen committed forward and space opening up behind their defensive line.

Tactical story: the cost of chasing the game

Uerdingen started brightly, pressing aggressively and forcing Velbert into a series of hurried clearances. The penalty rewarded that early pressure, and for the rest of the first half the hosts looked comfortable, controlling possession and limiting the visitors to hopeful balls forward.

The second half told a different story. Velbert pushed their midfield higher and began winning the ball in advanced areas, turning Uerdingen's possession into a series of transitions. The equaliser came from exactly that pattern. Once the game was level, Uerdingen's need to win it left them increasingly exposed, and the winning goal was almost inevitable in the closing stages.

Standout performers

Velbert's midfield deserves much of the credit, raising the tempo after the interval and repeatedly finding passes between Uerdingen's lines. The two second-half scorers both took their chances with maturity, the second in particular requiring composure with defenders closing in. For Uerdingen, the penalty taker was their most reliable outlet, but the team's inability to protect the lead after the break will be the main subject of the post-match review.

Table impact and what comes next

An away victory of this kind gives Velbert real momentum and strengthens their position in a tightly packed division, while Uerdingen's inconsistent home form remains the biggest obstacle to their ambitions. The club's support, one of the most passionate in the regional game, will expect a response in the next fixture. In a league this competitive, home points are the currency that separates contenders from the chasing pack, and Uerdingen have just handed three of them away.
