TSV Meerbusch edged a five-goal thriller 3-2 against VfL Viktoria Jüchen-Garzweiler in German Bundesliga 5 on Sunday evening, with a late goal sealing a hard-earned home victory in an end-to-end contest.

Match overview

The hosts doubled their advantage in the 31st minute through Jan Oberdorf, who tapped in from close range after a driving run down the left. Jüchen-Garzweiler responded before half-time, pulling one back in the 44th minute when a defensive clearance fell kindly to their striker, who finished with composure.

Tactical story

Meerbusch lined up in a 4-3-3 and looked to attack down the flanks, with Schmitz and Oberdorf combining well throughout. Their early pressing forced mistakes and allowed them to dictate the tempo. However, defensive lapses from set-pieces let Jüchen-Garzweiler back into the game. The visitors used a direct 4-4-2 and targeted the space behind Meerbusch’s full-backs.

In the second half, Meerbusch adjusted by pushing their midfield higher and winning more second balls. That extra pressure eventually told, as they created the decisive chance late on. Jüchen-Garzweiler will feel they deserved a point for their resilience, but Meerbusch’s quality in the final third proved the difference.

Standout performers

Marvin Schmitz was outstanding for TSV Meerbusch, scoring one and assisting the winner with a perfectly weighted cross. Jan Oberdorf’s two goals underlined his poaching instincts and his importance to the team. For VfL Viktoria Jüchen-Garzweiler, the centre-forward who scored the first goal and the defender who headed the equaliser were the standout performers, while their goalkeeper made several fine stops.

Season impact

The 3-2 win moves Meerbusch into a more comfortable position in the German Bundesliga 5 standings and extends their strong home form. Jüchen-Garzweiler remain in a tight battle in the lower half, but their fighting display suggests they can pick up points in the coming weeks. With the season still in its middle phase, both sides will look to build on this entertaining encounter — Meerbusch with momentum, and Jüchen-Garzweiler with the belief that they can compete against the division’s stronger sides.
