SSV Merten 3-1 Hürth — German Bundesliga 5, 20 September 2026.

SSV Merten came from behind to beat Hürth 3-1 in German Bundesliga 5, turning an early deficit into a convincing home victory. After conceding inside the first ten minutes, Merten responded with patience and quality, scoring three unanswered goals to claim all three points.

Match overview

Hürth made the brighter start and took the lead early when a quick attack caught Merten’s defence off guard. Rather than panicking, the home side settled into their passing game and gradually took control of midfield. The equaliser arrived before half-time, and from that moment Merten looked the more likely winner. Two second-half goals completed the comeback and gave the scoreline a fair reflection of their dominance.

Merten’s ability to recover from a setback was the defining feature of the match. They kept their shape, moved the ball intelligently and wore down a Hürth side that struggled to maintain its early intensity.

Key moments

• 9th minute: Hürth take a surprise lead with a low finish after a fast break down the right.
• 34th minute: Merten equalise when a midfielder arrives late in the box to convert a cut-back.
• 62nd minute: The home side go ahead for the first time, heading in from a corner.
• 75th minute: Hürth almost level, but a close-range effort is blocked by a defender.
• 88th minute: Merten wrap up the win with a third goal on the counter-attack.

Tactical story

After the early goal, Merten adjusted their build-up play, using the midfielders to create numerical advantages in central areas. Their full-backs pushed forward to provide width, and Hürth’s defensive line began to drop deeper as the pressure increased. The equaliser came from a patient move, and the second goal from a set piece highlighted Merten’s growing control.

Hürth tried to respond by pressing higher in the second half, but that left space behind for Merten to exploit. The third goal arrived in the closing minutes when Hürth committed players forward, and Merten finished the game with a clinical counter-attack. It was a mature performance from the home side after an awkward start.

Standout players

Merten’s playmaker was at the heart of everything, dictating tempo and creating chances with clever passes between the lines. The centre-back who scored the second goal was also excellent defensively, winning important headers. For Hürth, their early goalscorer showed sharp movement, but the team could not sustain enough possession to support him consistently.

Table and season impact

The win gives SSV Merten a valuable boost in the Bundesliga 5 table and reinforces their credentials as a side capable of competing for a high finish. Hürth will be frustrated after a promising start, but the long season offers plenty of opportunities to bounce back. For Merten, the manner of the comeback will be just as important as the three points.
