Rot-Weiss Koblenz 2-1 SV Rot Weiss Wittlich: Late Goal Seals Home Win

Rot-Weiss Koblenz edged SV Rot Weiss Wittlich 2-1 in German Bundesliga 5 on Saturday evening, with a late goal settling a tense and closely fought contest. Koblenz led early, were pegged back after the break, but found a winner in the closing stages to delight their home supporters.

The victory gives Koblenz an important three points in the league standings and leaves Wittlich with a narrow defeat despite a spirited second-half display.

Match Overview

Koblenz started the stronger side, pressing high and forcing Wittlich into mistakes in their own half. The early goal settled the hosts, who controlled possession for much of the first half without creating a steady stream of chances. Wittlich stayed in the game and improved after the interval, equalising through a well-taken set-piece move.

With the match seemingly heading for a draw, Koblenz pushed forward again and found the decisive goal through a substitute. Wittlich had little time to respond, and Koblenz managed the closing minutes professionally.

Key Moments

• 14th minute: Koblenz take the lead when Kevin Marx latches onto a loose ball in the box and slots it past the goalkeeper.
• 42nd minute: Wittlich’s best chance of the first half comes from a free-kick, but the header goes wide.
• 58th minute: Wittlich equalise as Daniel Becker converts from close range after a corner is flicked on.
• 72nd minute: Koblenz goalkeeper Tim Wagner makes a crucial save to deny Wittlich’s Marco Klein on the counter.
• 83rd minute: Koblenz substitute Leon Schmitt scores the winner with a composed finish after a quick passing move.
• 90+2 minutes: Wittlich push forward for a late equaliser, but Koblenz clear the final cross.

Tactical Story

Koblenz lined up in a 4-2-3-1 and looked to control the game through their midfield anchor, allowing the attacking midfielders to drift into pockets of space. Their early pressing forced Wittlich into long balls, which were often contested by Koblenz’s central defenders. The hosts’ full-backs provided width, but their final delivery was inconsistent in the first half.

Wittlich switched to a 5-3-2 after the break, which gave them more stability at the back and allowed their wing-backs to push forward. The change helped them equalise and briefly threatened to turn the game around. However, Koblenz’s bench made the difference, with Leon Schmitt’s fresh legs and movement proving too much for Wittlich’s tiring defence.

Standout Players

Kevin Marx was Koblenz’s most dangerous player, scoring the opener and linking play well between midfield and attack. Leon Schmitt made an immediate impact as a substitute, while goalkeeper Tim Wagner produced a vital second-half save. For Wittlich, Daniel Becker was the standout, scoring the equaliser and working tirelessly in midfield.

Table and Season Impact

Koblenz climb the Bundesliga 5 table with this win and will take confidence from their ability to respond after conceding. Wittlich remain in a difficult position but can take heart from a competitive away performance. The visitors will need to turn narrow defeats into points quickly if they are to move away from the lower reaches of the standings.
