Ingolstadt 04 Youth 3-4 SpVgg Weiden: Seven-Goal Thriller Goes to Visitors

FC Ingolstadt 04 Youth and SpVgg Weiden produced a remarkable seven-goal spectacle in German Bundesliga 5 on Saturday evening, with Weiden emerging 4-3 winners after a breathless second half. The match swung one way and then the other, but a late finish finally settled a contest that kept both benches on edge until the final whistle.

Weiden’s direct attacking approach paid dividends, while Ingolstadt’s young side showed character to fight back from two goals down. In the end, the visitors’ greater ruthlessness in the final third proved decisive.

Match Overview

The visitors started with real purpose and found themselves two goals ahead inside the opening 25 minutes. Ingolstadt, however, grew into the game as the first half wore on and pulled one back before the interval. The second half turned into an end-to-end affair, with both defences struggling to cope with the pace of the attacks.

Twice Ingolstadt levelled the score, and twice Weiden responded. The final blow came in the closing minutes, when a quick combination on the right opened up the home defence and allowed Weiden to seal all three points.

• 11th minute: Weiden take the lead through Fabian Rupp, who finishes neatly after a short corner routine.
• 24th minute: Rupp doubles his tally, converting a low cross from the left.
• 39th minute: Ingolstadt pull one back as Luca Sperl curls a shot into the top corner from the edge of the box.

Tactical Story

Ingolstadt’s youth side favoured a possession-based 4-3-3, looking to build through midfield and use their wide forwards in one-on-one situations. They created plenty of chances but were often caught too high up the pitch when moves broke down. Weiden, operating in a 4-2-3-1, were happy to play vertically and attack the space behind Ingolstadt’s advanced full-backs.

The game became a battle of transitions. Weiden’s midfield duo won several important second balls, allowing their front four to attack quickly. Ingolstadt’s response was impressive in spells, but their defensive organisation slipped at key moments, especially in the final ten minutes.

Standout Players

Fabian Rupp was central to Weiden’s attacking threat, scoring twice and stretching the Ingolstadt back line throughout. Michael Hönig’s late brace off the bench proved the difference, while the visitors’ captain, Jonas Reiter, held the midfield together under pressure. For Ingolstadt, Luca Sperl and Maximilian Frey were the bright spots, combining for three goals and several other dangerous moments.

Table and Season Impact

Weiden climb the Bundesliga 5 table with a result that could prove important for their confidence. Ingolstadt’s youth side remain a work in progress, but the attacking display showed why they are capable of troubling any opponent. The challenge for both sides will be finding more balance between ambition and defensive security in the coming weeks.
