VfL Vichttal produced one of the most eye-catching attacking performances of the German Bundesliga 5 round, defeating Borussia Lindenthal Hohenlind 6-3 on 18 October 2026. The visitors scored at key intervals, exploited space with ruthless efficiency and survived a spirited second-half response from the home side.

Match overview

Lindenthal Hohenlind expected a competitive home fixture, but Vichttal set the tone almost immediately. Their high press forced rushed clearances, and their midfield runners repeatedly arrived in dangerous positions. Lindenthal tried to play through the pressure, but turnovers in central areas left them exposed to quick, direct transitions.

By the time the first half reached its latter stages, Vichttal had established a commanding advantage. Lindenthal refused to collapse entirely and kept finding ways to threaten, but every time they narrowed the deficit, the visitors responded with another surge. The scoreline reflected both Vichttal’s finishing and Lindenthal’s defensive difficulties.

Key moments

• 8’ – Vichttal open the scoring: Tobias Reuter finishes a fast move down the right.
• 19’ – Mertens doubles the lead: A midfield turnover releases the striker, who finishes calmly.
• 27’ – Lindenthal respond: David Haas pulls one back with a composed finish inside the box.
• 41’ – Vichttal restore control: Mertens scores his second after a low cross from the left.
• 48’ – Haas again: Lindenthal’s forward makes it 3-2 with a sharp near-post finish.
• 57’ – Reuter strikes again: Vichttal’s winger restores a two-goal cushion.
• 74’ – Mertens completes his hat-trick: A quick counter ends with a confident finish for 5-3.
• 86’ – Late sixth: Substitute Nico Sauer completes the scoring after a rebound.

Tactical story

Vichttal’s plan was clear: press aggressively, win the ball in midfield and attack the space behind Lindenthal’s advanced full-backs. It worked repeatedly. Their front three rotated well, dragging defenders out of position, while the midfielders timed their runs to arrive late in the box. The result was a stream of high-quality chances and a six-goal return.

Lindenthal’s attacking play was not the main problem. Haas caused problems throughout, and the home side created enough to stay in the contest. The issue was defensive structure. Too often, Lindenthal were left with too few players behind the ball when possession was lost, and Vichttal punished those gaps with clinical efficiency. The home side’s attempts to chase the game only increased the space available to the visitors.

Standout players

Mertens was the headline performer with a well-taken hat-trick, showing movement, timing and composure. Reuter’s direct running and end product made him a constant threat, while Sauer’s late goal underlined Vichttal’s depth from the bench. Haas deserved credit for Lindenthal’s persistence, but his efforts were not enough to offset the team’s defensive issues.

Table impact

The three points lift VfL Vichttal’s momentum in the Bundesliga 5 standings and send a warning to the rest of the division about their attacking potential. For Borussia Lindenthal Hohenlind, the result is a damaging one, particularly because they scored three times at home and still lost comfortably. The focus in the coming week will need to be on rest defence and preventing central turnovers.

As a spectacle, the 6-3 scoreline delivered everything a neutral could want: pace, goals, momentum swings and individual brilliance. For Lindenthal, however, it will serve as a demanding review of a night when their attacking effort was undermined by a defence that could not contain Vichttal’s transitions.
