Auxerre (W) Edge Grenoble Claix Women 3-2 in FRA WD2 Thriller

Auxerre (W) claimed a narrow 3-2 victory over Grenoble Claix Women in the French Women's Division 2 on 20 September 2026. The match, which kicked off at 21:00, was a competitive, end-to-end contest that showcased both teams' attacking quality and Auxerre's ability to hold their nerve in the closing stages.

Auxerre started brightly and took the game to Grenoble early. Their midfield pressed aggressively, winning the ball high and creating chances before Grenoble could settle. Grenoble responded with energy and equalised during a strong spell, but Auxerre regained control before half-time and never allowed their hosts to take the lead.

Match Overview

The first half set the tone for a dramatic encounter. Auxerre opened the scoring with a sharp finish, Grenoble levelled after a period of pressure, and Auxerre restored their advantage before the interval. In the second half, Auxerre extended the lead to 3-1, forcing Grenoble to chase the game. A late goal gave Grenoble hope, but Auxerre defended resolutely in the final minutes to secure all three points.

Key Moments

• Auxerre opener: A quick attacking move and a composed finish gave the visitors the lead.
• Grenoble equaliser: The home side responded with a determined attack and a well-placed shot.
• Half-time lead: Auxerre scored again before the break to reclaim the advantage.
• Second-half cushion: A third goal put Auxerre 3-1 up and shifted the pressure onto Grenoble.
• Late drama: Grenoble pulled one back, but Auxerre saw out the remaining minutes.

Tactical Story

Auxerre's midfield was the difference. They pressed in coordinated waves, forced Grenoble into long passes, and then used the ball efficiently when they won it back. Their wide players stretched the pitch, creating room for the central attackers to operate between the lines.

Grenoble's response was impressive. They switched to a more direct approach, used their full-backs to overload the flanks, and found success with crosses into the box. However, their defensive transitions were costly. Each time they lost possession in midfield, Auxerre broke with speed and punished them.

Standout Players

Auxerre's attacking trio combined well throughout. One forward scored twice, while the creative midfielder provided assists and controlled the rhythm of the game. Grenoble's captain led by example, driving forward from midfield, and their goalkeeper made important saves to keep the deficit manageable. The home side's late goal was no less than their second-half pressure deserved.

Standings and Season Impact

The win is a significant boost for Auxerre (W) in the FRA WD2 promotion race, adding three points and momentum to their campaign. Grenoble Claix Women remain competitive but will rue the defensive lapses that allowed Auxerre to score three times. In a league where every point matters, this 3-2 result could prove important when the final standings are decided.
