Metz U19 delivered a dominant away performance in the French U19 Youth League on September 20, 2026, beating Auxerre U19 4-1. The visitors controlled large parts of the match with sharp pressing, quick combinations and clinical finishing.

Auxerre had moments of promise, especially after pulling a goal back, but Metz's intensity and organisation proved too much. The result underlines Metz's quality in youth competition and leaves Auxerre searching for consistency.

Match overview

Metz took the lead in the 18th minute after winning the ball high up the pitch. A quick exchange on the edge of the box opened space, and the striker finished low into the corner. The lead was doubled in the 39th minute when a cross from the left was met with a header that looped over the goalkeeper.

Auxerre improved at the start of the second half and pulled one back in the 58th minute. Their midfielder won a loose ball and drove forward before firing a shot from 20 yards. That goal gave the home side hope, but Metz responded almost immediately.

In the 72nd minute, Metz restored their two-goal cushion with a well-worked team move. The ball was moved from right to left before a cutback was converted at the near post. Metz added a fourth in the 88th minute on the counter, with their winger finishing past the advancing goalkeeper.

Key moments

• 18' – 1-0 Metz: High pressure forces a turnover, and the striker finishes neatly.
• 39' – 2-0 Metz: A left-wing cross is headed home.
• 58' – 2-1 Auxerre: A driving run and shot from outside the box gives the home side hope.
• 72' – 3-1 Metz: A sweeping move ends with a close-range finish.
• 88' – 4-1 Metz: A counter-attack is finished calmly by the winger.

Tactical story

Metz's game plan was built on aggressive pressing and quick vertical passes. They denied Auxerre time on the ball in midfield and forced long balls that their defence dealt with comfortably. When they won possession, they attacked with purpose, often using the wide areas to stretch Auxerre's back line.

Auxerre's goal came from a moment of individual quality, but they struggled to sustain pressure. Their midfield was often outnumbered, and their defence had difficulty tracking runners. Metz's substitutions also made an impact, keeping the energy levels high until the final whistle.

Standout players

Metz's centre-forward was a constant threat, scoring the opener and linking play effectively. Their left winger created problems all afternoon and capped his performance with the fourth goal. The midfield anchor broke up play and started attacks with simple, intelligent passes.

For Auxerre, the goalscorer showed drive and technique, and their goalkeeper made several saves to keep the score from becoming even more one-sided. The captain tried to rally the team, but Metz's control was too strong.

Season impact

Metz U19's convincing win strengthens their position in the French U19 Youth League and sends a message to other sides in the division. For Auxerre U19, it is a learning experience: the team showed spirit but must improve its defensive shape and ball retention. Both academies will continue their development programmes with important fixtures ahead.
