Angoulême returned from Brittany with a narrow but valuable 1-0 victory over Pontivy in the French Championnat National 2 on October 4, 2026. A second-half goal from substitute Mathis Roux decided a tight contest in which Pontivy enjoyed more possession but lacked the final pass, while Angoulême defended with discipline and took their one clear chance.

Match overview

Pontivy and Angoulême are separated by geography but share the same ambition in National 2: establish themselves in the upper half of the table and avoid the relegation scrap. Pontivy, backed by a vocal home crowd, started with energy and moved the ball quickly through midfield. Angoulême sat deeper, inviting pressure and looking for turnovers. It was a classic away-performance blueprint, and it worked almost perfectly.

Key moments

The first half produced few clear openings. Pontivy's best moment came from a free-kick in the 22nd minute, but the Angoulême goalkeeper punched clear under pressure. The visitors' defensive line held firm, stepping up to catch Pontivy forwards offside three times before the interval. Angoulême grew into the game and carved out a half-chance just before half-time when a low cross flashed across goal.

The decisive moment arrived in the 67th minute. Angoulême won the ball in midfield and broke quickly, with Roux timing his run perfectly to meet a through ball. He rounded the goalkeeper and rolled the ball into the empty net. Pontivy pushed for an equaliser, throwing extra bodies forward, and a header from a corner in the 81st minute clipped the top of the crossbar. Angoulême survived five minutes of stoppage time to claim the win.

Tactical story

Pontivy set up in a 4-3-3 and tried to create overloads in wide areas, but Angoulême's 4-4-2 mid-block limited space between the lines. The visitors were content to concede possession in harmless areas and then counter through the channels. Roux's introduction gave Angoulême a faster outlet, and his goal came directly from that tactical shift. Pontivy's full-backs pushed high in search of an equaliser, but the final delivery was often overhit or blocked.

Standout players

• Mathis Roux (Angoulême): The substitute's clever run and composed finish won the match.
• Angoulême goalkeeper: Commanding in the air and quick off his line.
• Angoulême centre-backs: Kept Pontivy's strikers quiet for long spells.
• Pontivy captain: Drove his team forward and never stopped trying to create.

Season impact

For Angoulême, this is the kind of away result that can define a season. Three points on the road, a clean sheet, and a goal from a substitute show squad depth and tactical flexibility. Pontivy are left with a frustrating zero from a game they largely controlled, and they will need to convert possession into chances more efficiently in the coming weeks. The National 2 table remains tight, but Angoulême's win gives them momentum.
