Berre SC secured a confident 2-0 victory over AS Saint-Etienne B in the French Championnat National 2 on 20 September 2026, combining defensive solidity with two well-crafted goals. The home side controlled large periods of the match and punished the visitors either side of half-time to claim all three points.

AS Saint-Etienne B, fielding a young and energetic lineup, showed flashes of promise but struggled to break down a disciplined Berre defence. The result adds to Berre's growing reputation as a tough opponent on home soil.

Match overview

Berre SC started brightly, pressing high and forcing Saint-Etienne's young defenders into early clearances. The home side's midfield trio set the tone, winning the ball back quickly and feeding the wide players. Saint-Etienne B looked to play out from the back, but Berre's organised press made that difficult.

The opening goal came from a set piece, a reminder of Berre's work on the training ground. After the break, they doubled the lead with a flowing move that started on the right and ended with a composed finish. Saint-Etienne B improved in the final 20 minutes, but Berre managed the game professionally.

Key moments

• 18' — Berre SC take the lead: a deep corner is headed back across goal and Karim Benali forces it over the line from close range.
• 34' — Saint-Etienne B's best chance: a quick counter ends with a low shot that Berre's goalkeeper saves with his legs.
• 52' — Berre double the advantage. A slick passing move releases Lucas Ferreira on the right, and his cut-back is converted by Enzo Roux.
• 76' — Saint-Etienne B push forward and win a free kick on the edge of the box, but the effort flies just over.
• 88' — Berre nearly add a third on the break, but the final shot is dragged wide.

Tactical story

Berre SC's 4-3-3 was designed to control the middle third. The front three pressed in a coordinated way, cutting off passes into Saint-Etienne's central midfielders. That forced the visitors into long balls, which Berre's centre-backs dealt with comfortably. In possession, Berre looked to overload the flanks and deliver early crosses.

AS Saint-Etienne B's 4-2-3-1 had moments of fluidity, especially when their No. 10 dropped deep to collect the ball. However, they lacked a focal point in the box and often had to settle for shots from distance. Their young defenders will learn from the experience, but Berre's game management was the difference.

Standout players

Karim Benali opened the scoring and led the line with physicality, while Enzo Roux capped a fine midfield display with the second goal. Lucas Ferreira was a constant threat on the right. For Saint-Etienne B, the goalkeeper made several sharp saves to keep the score respectable, and their captain in midfield tried to drive the team forward.

What it means for the table

Berre SC move up the Championnat National 2 standings with this win, strengthening their position in the upper half of the table. The clean sheet will please the coaching staff, as will the spread of goalscorers. AS Saint-Etienne B remain a work in progress; their focus will be on turning promising passages of play into goals, starting with their next fixture.
