SalPa edge OLS in five-goal Ykkonen thriller

Salon Palloilijat (SalPa) claimed a dramatic 3-2 victory over Oulun Luistinseura (OLS) in Finnish Ykkonen action on 18 October 2026, winning a contest that swung back and forth throughout the evening. A late goal settled a match full of attacking intent, defensive lapses, and momentum shifts, giving the home side three valuable points in front of their supporters.

Match overview

Played under the lights with a 20:00 kick-off, the match promised plenty and delivered almost immediately. SalPa started with purpose, pressing high and forcing OLS into hurried clearances. The visitors, however, looked dangerous whenever they broke the first line of pressure, and the game developed into an entertaining battle between SalPa’s possession-based approach and OLS’s quick transitions.

The scoreline changed hands more than once, but neither side was able to establish full control. SalPa’s willingness to commit bodies forward left space at the back, while OLS’s direct running caused problems throughout. In the end, the home team’s greater urgency in the final fifteen minutes proved decisive.

Key moments

• 12th minute: SalPa opened the scoring through Elias Mäkinen, who arrived late in the box and finished calmly after a neat move down the right.
• 28th minute: OLS responded through Ville Räisänen, whose angled run behind the defence was rewarded with a low finish into the far corner.
• 41st minute: SalPa regained the lead when Onni Virtanen converted from close range after a corner was only half-cleared.
• 63rd minute: OLS equalised for a second time, Juhani Kettunen heading home from a well-delivered set piece.
• 84th minute: Substitute Aatu Niemi scored the winner, reacting quickest to a loose ball inside the area and lifting it over the goalkeeper.

Tactical story

SalPa’s high press was central to their success. By pushing their wide players aggressively and asking the midfield to squeeze central areas, they disrupted OLS’s attempts to play out from the back. The home side also created overloads on the flanks, particularly in the first half, and their willingness to send full-backs forward gave OLS persistent problems.

OLS, though, were not passive. Their best moments came from rapid counter-attacks and diagonal balls into the channels. Both of their goals stemmed from situations where SalPa’s defensive line was stretched, and for long periods the visitors looked capable of stealing the points. The difference ultimately came in the final moments, when SalPa’s bench made a decisive impact and the home side maintained their composure in the box.

Standout performers

Mäkinen was influential throughout for SalPa, linking midfield and attack and setting the tone with the opening goal. Niemi’s match-winning contribution from the bench underlined the value of the home squad, while Virtanen’s energy in midfield helped SalPa sustain pressure. For OLS, Räisänen and Kettunen both took their goals well, and the visiting goalkeeper made several important saves before the late breakthrough.

What it means

The win gives SalPa a timely boost in the Ykkonen campaign and reinforces their ability to grind out results in tight, high-scoring matches. For OLS, the defeat is a frustrating one after twice fighting back to level terms, but their attacking display offered encouragement. The result adds another layer of intrigue to the league’s competitive middle pack, where consistency will be crucial as the season moves toward its decisive phase.
