Sweden Women Run Rampant in 5-0 Qualifying Win Over Lithuania

Sweden Women produced a ruthless away performance in UEFA qualification for the FIFA Women's World Cup, dismantling Lithuania Women 5-0 in Vilnius. It was a display that underlined the gulf in class between one of Europe's established powers and a Lithuanian side still building at international level, and it kept Sweden firmly on course in their qualifying group.

From the opening whistle, the visitors imposed their tempo. Sweden pressed high, circulated the ball quickly through midfield, and forced Lithuania into a defensive shell that lasted the full ninety minutes. The only surprise was that it took until the middle of the first half for the scoreline to reflect the pattern of play.

Match Overview

Sweden lined up with their trademark fluid attacking structure, overloading the flanks and using late runners from midfield to break through deep blocks. Lithuania, understandably, sat compact and tried to deny space between the lines, but the sheer volume of Swedish possession eventually told.

Once the first goal arrived, the contest lost much of its tension. Sweden doubled their lead before the interval and effectively ended the game as a contest, with Lithuania's best moments coming from occasional counter-attacks that never quite produced a meaningful shot on target.

Key Moments

• An early Swedish breakthrough set the tone, coming after a sustained spell of pressure and a clever piece of link-up play on the edge of the box.
• A second goal before half-time gave Sweden complete control and forced Lithuania to abandon their cautious approach.
• The second half brought three further goals as spaces opened up, with Sweden's substitutes adding fresh intensity to a tiring opposition defence.

Standout Players

Sweden's forward line was the story of the night, with sharp movement and clinical finishing across the front three. Their wingers repeatedly beat their markers on the outside, while the central midfield dictated the rhythm of the match from start to finish. The defence, for their part, were rarely troubled, and the goalkeeper's clean sheet was one of the quieter of her international career.

For Lithuania, there were isolated positives: the goalkeeper made several saves to keep the scoreline from becoming even more lopsided, and the young midfielders showed willingness to carry the ball forward when the opportunity allowed. Against opposition of this calibre, though, the margin was always likely to be severe.

Qualifying Context

Results like this matter in more than just the standings. Goal difference can decide group winners and seeding in UEFA's World Cup qualifying format, where only the strongest sides progress automatically. Sweden's ability to convert dominance into a five-goal haul is precisely the kind of ruthlessness that separates genuine contenders from the rest of the field.

Lithuania, meanwhile, will treat the fixture as a learning experience. Their campaign will be judged on results against the more evenly matched teams in the group, and the challenge now is to regroup quickly for the next round of fixtures.

Final score: Lithuania Women 0-5 Sweden Women.
