Stafford Rangers advanced in the FA Cup with a 2-1 away victory over Halesowen Town on Wednesday 7 October 2026. In a tie full of cup atmosphere and nervous energy, Stafford’s clinical finishing proved the difference, sending the visitors through and leaving Halesowen to reflect on what might have been.

The FA Cup remains one of the most cherished competitions in English football, and for clubs at this level, a run in the tournament can boost morale, finances, and local pride. This result gave Stafford Rangers exactly that, while Halesowen Town exited with a performance that had plenty of effort but not quite enough end product.

Cup Tie Overview

Halesowen Town began brightly in front of their home supporters, looking to impose themselves early. They moved the ball well in midfield and created a couple of half-chances, but Stafford Rangers defended with discipline and waited for their opportunities. The away side’s game plan was clear: stay compact, break quickly, and take advantage of any space behind the Halesowen defence.

That approach paid off. Stafford scored twice, and although Halesowen pulled a goal back to set up a tense finish, the visitors managed the closing stages well. The 2-1 scoreline was narrow, but Stafford’s ability to score at key moments gave them the edge in a knockout contest.

Key Moments

• Halesowen’s bright start: The hosts pressed forward and forced a few early corners, but could not find the opening goal.
• Stafford take the lead: A swift counter-attack ended with a composed finish, stunning the home crowd.
• Second goal for Stafford: Another well-executed move doubled the advantage and put the visitors in control.
• Halesowen pull one back: A determined response gave the Yeltz hope and made the final minutes uncomfortable for Stafford.
• Late defending: Stafford Rangers held firm, clearing dangerous balls into the box and running down the clock.

Tactical Story

Halesowen Town enjoyed more of the ball, especially in the second half, but they struggled to break down a well-organised Stafford Rangers defence. The hosts’ wingers delivered several crosses, yet the Stafford centre-backs dealt with them confidently. Halesowen’s midfield tried to play through the lines, but Stafford’s midfielders screened effectively and forced play wide.

Stafford’s attacking plan was based on speed. When they won possession, they looked to release their forwards quickly. That directness created the two goals and kept Halesowen from committing too many players forward. In cup football, that kind of efficiency is often decisive, and so it proved here.

Standout Players

Stafford Rangers’ goalkeeper produced important saves, particularly during Halesowen’s best spell, and his handling under pressure was excellent. The Stafford captain marshalled the defence well, while the forwards combined intelligently for the goals. For Halesowen, the central midfielder was a driving force, and the substitute who came on in the second half added energy and helped create the goal that made it 2-1.

What It Means

Stafford Rangers move on in the FA Cup, and the result will give them confidence for the league campaign as well. Halesowen Town exit the competition, but they can take heart from a spirited performance.
