Cirencester and Farnham Town could not be separated over ninety minutes, drawing 2-2 in a compelling FA Cup qualifying tie that was eventually settled from the penalty spot after a dramatic finish at the Corinium Stadium.

Farnham led early, Cirencester responded through Tommy Anderson and Josh Kerr, and it looked as though the home side had done enough – until Owen Price struck two minutes from time to force a shootout, which the visitors won 4-3 to progress.

Match overview

Two Southern-based clubs at the same level produced a contest that had almost everything: an early goal, a comeback, a late equaliser and the tension of a penalty shootout under the floodlights. Cirencester will feel they were the better side for long periods; Farnham will point to their resilience and the quality of their late goal.

The visitors started the sharper, pressing high and forcing errors in the Cirencester build-up. But the home side grew into the game, dominating the second half and looking the more likely winners until the very last moments.

Key moments

• 11th minute – 0-1 Farnham: Dan Smith pounced on a misplaced pass and finished confidently one-on-one.
• 27th minute – 1-1 Cirencester: Tommy Anderson curled a superb effort into the top corner from twenty yards.
• 70th minute – 2-1 Cirencester: Josh Kerr turned the tie around, converting from close range after a goalmouth scramble.
• 88th minute – 2-2 Farnham: Owen Price reacted quickest to a loose ball in the box and stabbed it home to force the shootout.
• Penalties: Both sides converted their first three spot-kicks, before a save and a miss settled a nerve-shredding shootout 4-3 in Farnham's favour.

Tactical story

Farnham's high press caused problems early on, but it also drained energy, and as the match wore on Cirencester's midfield began to find pockets of space between the lines. Kerr's movement was particularly effective, dragging centre-backs out of position and creating room for runners from deep.

The visitors' late switch to a more direct approach paid off. With bodies pushed forward and Cirencester dropping deeper to protect their lead, Farnham won the second balls that mattered most, and Price's equaliser was the reward for their refusal to accept defeat.

Standout players

Anderson's goal was the standout moment of the match, and his overall performance in midfield gave Cirencester control for long spells. Kerr's willingness to run in behind kept the home side's attack alive. Farnham's goalkeeper was the hero of the shootout, saving the decisive penalty after an otherwise busy evening.

Price deserves credit for the composure of his late finish – the kind of goal that changes the mood of an entire season.

Season impact

Farnham Town move on in the competition with a financial boost, a confidence lift and the knowledge that they can recover from difficult moments in knockout football. A draw is often said to feel like a defeat for one side and a win for the other, and that was exactly the case here.

Cirencester are left to reflect on a game they controlled for long periods and a place in the next round that slipped away in the 88th minute. The response in the league over the coming weeks will say a great deal about the character of the squad.
