Saint George SC were held to a 1-1 draw by Negele Arsi in the Ethiopia Premier League, dropping two points in a match that highlighted both the champions' attacking quality and their recurring struggles against disciplined, well-organised opposition.

In front of a passionate Addis Ababa crowd, the hosts dominated long stretches of play but were undone by a resilient Negele Arsi side that defended deep, broke quickly, and took one of their few genuine chances.

Match overview

Saint George controlled possession from the opening whistle, circulating the ball patiently and looking to draw Negele Arsi out of their defensive shape. The visitors, however, were happy to sit back in two compact banks of four, conceding territory while protecting the central corridor.

That approach frustrated the hosts for long periods. Saint George's wingers found space out wide but faced a crowded penalty area whenever crosses arrived, and their attempts to play through the middle were repeatedly blocked by a determined midfield screen.

Key moments

• Saint George take the lead: The breakthrough came from a well-constructed move, finished confidently after a clever run in behind the defence.
• Negele Arsi respond: The equaliser arrived in the second half, a swift counter-attack punished a moment of carelessness in the hosts' build-up.
• Late pressure: Saint George pushed hard for a winner, forcing several corners and a string of desperate clearances, but the decisive finish never came.

Tactical story

The game was a classic contest between possession and counter-attacking. Saint George committed both full-backs forward, creating numerical superiority in wide areas but leaving space behind for Negele Arsi's quick forwards to exploit. The visitors' equaliser was a direct product of that trade-off.

Negele Arsi's defensive discipline deserves credit. Their centre-backs defended the box superbly, timing tackles and headers well, while their goalkeeper handled crosses with composure under sustained late pressure.

Standout performers

Saint George's attacking midfielder was the game's most creative presence, constantly finding pockets of space and linking play between the lines. The goalscorer's movement was sharp throughout, and the team's defensive midfielder worked tirelessly to cover the gaps left by advancing full-backs.

For Negele Arsi, the goalkeeper and the two centre-backs were outstanding, while the forward who scored the equaliser showed exactly the kind of clinical instinct that makes counter-attacking sides dangerous in the Ethiopian top flight.

Standings and season impact

Dropping points at home is always costly for a club with Saint George's ambitions. In a league where the title race is traditionally tight, and where away fixtures in cities such as Arsi often prove treacherous, home draws against mid-table opponents can prove decisive in the final reckoning.

For Negele Arsi, the point is a strong result and further evidence that they can compete with the league's established powers. Saint George will now look to convert their dominance into goals in the next round and avoid a habit of dropping points in matches they largely control.
