Hawassa City fell to a 0-1 home defeat against Defence Force ETH in the Ethiopia Premier League on Sunday, October 11, 2026. A solitary goal proved decisive in a match that the hosts largely controlled but could not convert, leaving Defence Force to celebrate a well-earned away victory.

Match Overview

Hawassa City, playing at home in front of their own supporters, began the match as the more proactive side, looking to move the ball quickly and attack through the wide channels. Defence Force ETH, as their name suggests, set up with a robust, disciplined structure, prioritising defensive solidity and looking to punish mistakes on the break.

The pattern was established early: Hawassa City probed and circulated possession, while Defence Force sat in a compact mid-block, comfortable letting the hosts have the ball in areas where they could do little damage.

Key Moments

• 16th minute: Hawassa City's first clear opening, a shot from inside the box blocked by a brave defensive challenge.
• 31st minute: A free-kick from a promising position is curled just over the crossbar for the hosts.
• 44th minute: Defence Force's goalkeeper tips a dipping effort over the bar to keep the scores level at half-time.
• 57th minute: The breakthrough. Defence Force win the ball in midfield, break quickly down the right, and a low cross is turned in at the near post.
• 72nd minute: Hawassa City introduce fresh attackers and begin delivering a stream of crosses into the box.
• 90th minute: A last-gasp header flashes wide as Defence Force hold on for all three points.

Tactical Story

Defence Force ETH's victory was built on defensive organisation and ruthless efficiency in transition. Their back four held a disciplined line throughout, stepping up to catch Hawassa City's strikers offside repeatedly and forcing the hosts to play sideways rather than forwards.

The winning goal came from exactly the scenario the visitors had prepared for — a turnover in central midfield followed by a rapid, direct attack before Hawassa City's defensive shape could recover. In the closing half-hour, Defence Force dropped even deeper, inviting pressure but defending their penalty area with a series of blocks, clearances, and well-timed challenges.

Standout Performers

The Defence Force goalkeeper was instrumental, making a handful of important saves and dealing confidently with the barrage of second-half crosses. Their right-sided attacker was the game's most incisive player, providing the assist for the goal and carrying a genuine counter-attacking threat all evening.

For Hawassa City, the central midfielder who kept the tempo high and rarely gave the ball away deserved better from the result, while the substitute introduced on 72 minutes added real urgency and came closest to an equaliser.

What the Result Means

Three away points are extremely valuable for Defence Force ETH, strengthening their position in the Ethiopia Premier League table and underlining their reputation as a difficult side to break down. Hawassa City, meanwhile, are left to reflect on a familiar frustration — plenty of territory and possession, but no reward. The result tightens the competitive picture in the league and sets up an interesting run of fixtures for both clubs as the season progresses.
