Ethiopian Coffee suffered a 0-1 defeat at home to Sheger Ketema in the Ethiopia Premier League on Sunday, October 11, 2026. A single goal was enough to settle a closely contested Addis Ababa derby-style encounter, leaving the hosts empty-handed despite long spells of possession.

Match Overview

Matches between these two Addis Ababa clubs always carry extra weight, and this one was no exception. Ethiopian Coffee, one of the most storied names in Ethiopian football, started with intent, moving the ball quickly through midfield and looking to stretch Sheger Ketema's defensive block with switches of play.

Sheger Ketema, however, arrived with a clear and disciplined plan: defend compactly, deny space between the lines, and strike on the counter. It was a strategy that required patience, and it was rewarded with the only goal of the game.

Key Moments

• 20th minute: Ethiopian Coffee's best early chance, a header from a right-wing cross that clears the crossbar.
• 38th minute: A sharp save from the Sheger Ketema goalkeeper keeps out a low shot from the edge of the area.
• 49th minute: The decisive goal. Sheger Ketema win possession in midfield and break at speed, finishing with a composed strike into the far corner.
• 64th minute: Ethiopian Coffee push more players forward, forcing a series of corners that come to nothing.
• 79th minute: A goal-line clearance denies the hosts an equaliser after a scramble in the box.
• 90+3rd minute: A final long ball into the area is headed clear as Sheger Ketema see out the win.

Tactical Story

This was a classic case of possession without penetration. Ethiopian Coffee enjoyed the lion's share of the ball but struggled to break down a well-organised defensive unit that stayed narrow and forced play into wide areas, where crosses were comfortably dealt with by the visiting centre-backs.

Sheger Ketema's winning goal encapsulated their approach: a compact midfield block, a quick turnover, and a direct transition into the space left behind by Ethiopian Coffee's advanced full-backs. After taking the lead, they defended their advantage intelligently, slowing the tempo and committing fouls in safe areas to disrupt the hosts' rhythm.

Standout Performers

Sheger Ketema's goalkeeper was the man of the match, producing two important saves and commanding his area confidently under late pressure. The goalscorer's movement for the winning goal — timing a run into the channel before finishing calmly — was the individual highlight of the evening.

For Ethiopian Coffee, the left-sided attacker was their most persistent threat, repeatedly beating his marker and delivering dangerous balls into the box, but the lack of a decisive presence in the penalty area proved costly.

What the Result Means

The win is a valuable one for Sheger Ketema in the Ethiopia Premier League table, adding an away victory against a well-supported rival to their campaign. For Ethiopian Coffee, it is a missed opportunity on home soil and a reminder that dominance in possession must be converted into goals. With the league season still unfolding, both clubs will look to this result as a reference point — one for belief, the other for correction.
