Ethio Electric FC claimed a narrow 1-0 away win over Ethiopian Coffee in the Ethiopia Premier League on 25 October 2026, with Yonas Mekonnen’s second-half goal settling a tightly contested match in Addis Ababa.

Match overview

Ethiopian Coffee enjoyed the better of the possession and created the clearer openings in the first hour, but they were repeatedly frustrated by a compact Ethio Electric defensive block. The hosts moved the ball well through midfield and looked dangerous whenever their wide players isolated the full-backs, yet the final ball lacked precision. Ethio Electric, meanwhile, defended in numbers and waited for transitions.

The decisive moment arrived in the second half, when a quick break caught Ethiopian Coffee with too many players committed forward. Yonas Mekonnen timed his run into the penalty area perfectly and finished low beyond the goalkeeper. From there, Ethio Electric dropped deeper, absorbed pressure, and relied on goalkeeper Dawit Bekele to protect the lead.

Key moments

• 9th minute: Ethiopian Coffee’s first effort from distance flashes wide of the far post.
• 27th minute: Bekele makes a sharp save at his near post after a deflected cross threatens to creep in.
• 41st minute: Ethiopian Coffee have a goal ruled out for offside after a quick free-kick routine.
• 64th minute: Yonas Mekonnen scores the only goal, finishing calmly after a fast counter-attack.
• 78th minute: Bekele denies Ethiopian Coffee with a strong one-on-one save.
• 90+4th minute: A last-ditch header clears the danger as Ethio Electric hold on.

Tactical story

Ethiopian Coffee’s 4-3-3 was built around controlling midfield and creating overloads on the wings. They succeeded in pushing Ethio Electric back for long spells, but their attacking players often received the ball with their backs to goal. The hosts’ best chances came from second balls and set pieces, yet they could not find a way through a defence that stayed compact and communicated well.

Ethio Electric’s 4-4-2 mid-block was less glamorous but highly effective. Their two strikers worked hard to cut off passing lanes into midfield, while the wide midfielders tucked in to protect the central corridor. Once they took the lead, they managed the game intelligently, slowing the tempo and forcing Ethiopian Coffee to cross from wider areas. It was a disciplined away performance built on organisation and clinical finishing.

Standout players

Mekonnen was the match-winner, and his movement for the goal underlined his value in transition. Bekele produced two important saves in the second half and commanded his box well. Ethiopian Coffee’s Abel Mamo was composed in goal despite the defeat, while Fikru Alemu worked tirelessly in attack but lacked support at key moments.

What the result means

The three points give Ethio Electric FC a valuable boost in the Ethiopia Premier League standings and reward their disciplined approach. Ethiopian Coffee remain with work to do after a frustrating afternoon in front of goal, though their overall performance offered encouragement. In a league where away victories can shape momentum, this was a significant result for the visitors.
