Norton Stockton Ancients Women and Stockport County Women played out a breathless 3-3 draw in the ENLW on 18 October 2026, sharing six goals in a match that swung one way and then the other. It was a night of attacking intent, defensive vulnerability and no little drama.

Six-goal spectacle

The home side made the brighter start and took the lead after pressing Stockport into an early mistake. Norton Stockton Ancients moved the ball quickly through midfield and found space in the box, finishing with confidence to settle the early nerves. Stockport responded well, though, equalising before half-time with a well-worked move that exposed the home defence on the counter.

The second half was even more open. Norton Stockton Ancients restored their advantage after the restart, only for Stockport County to hit back with two quick goals and turn the match around. At 3-2 down, the hosts looked in danger of slipping to defeat, but they found a late response to claim a point in a game that never allowed either side to feel comfortable.

Key moments

• Norton Stockton Ancients opened the scoring early after a high press forced a turnover in Stockport’s half.
• Stockport County equalised before the break with a sharp counter-attacking move.
• The hosts regained the lead early in the second half, only for Stockport to score twice in a furious spell.
• A late equaliser from Norton Stockton Ancients ensured the points were shared after a tense finale.

Tactical story

Both teams prioritised forward momentum over control. Norton Stockton Ancients pressed high and tried to win the ball back quickly in the final third, while Stockport County looked most dangerous when playing direct and attacking the space behind the home defence. The midfield area became a rotation of turnovers, and neither back line ever looked fully settled.

Set pieces also played a role in the contest, with both teams sending numbers forward and creating scrambled moments inside the box. In the end, the match was decided less by structure and more by which side could keep its composure during the game’s wildest spells.

Standout performers

Norton Stockton Ancients’ attacking players caused problems throughout with their movement and willingness to shoot early. Their late equaliser came from persistence rather than perfection. Stockport County’s midfield drove the comeback with energy and direct running, while their forwards punished the spaces that opened up during the second half. Both goalkeepers were busy and both defences will feel they could have done more.

What the result means

A point apiece keeps both sides moving in the ENLW table, but the mood may differ. Stockport County will be frustrated to have led late and not held on; Norton Stockton Ancients will take heart from their refusal to fold after conceding twice in quick succession. A 3-3 draw is rarely a perfect result, but it was a compelling reminder of the attacking quality both teams can produce.
