Ashton United were left to rue a missed opportunity as Gainsborough Trinity left Hurst Cross with a hard-fought 2-1 victory in the Northern Premier League. The result extended Trinity's encouraging start to the campaign, while the hosts were left searching for answers after surrendering an early lead.

Fast start from the hosts

Ashton made an ideal start, taking the lead inside the opening quarter of an hour. A patient build-up culminated in a cross from the left, and the home forward produced a neat glancing header that found the far corner. The early goal settled the hosts, who controlled possession for large spells of the first half without adding to their lead. Gainsborough, however, remained a threat on the counter-attack and served notice of their danger with two promising breaks just before the half-hour mark.

Gainsborough grow into the game

As the first half wore on, Gainsborough Trinity began to assert themselves in midfield. Their equaliser arrived shortly before the break when a swift move released a striker down the inside-left channel, and his angled finish left the Ashton goalkeeper with no chance. The away side came close to a second before the interval, with a curling effort from the edge of the box clipping the top of the crossbar.

Second-half winner

The second half followed a similar pattern, with Ashton enjoying plenty of the ball but failing to create clear-cut chances. Gainsborough, by contrast, looked dangerous every time they advanced. The winning goal came midway through the half as a loose ball in the box was pounced upon by a Trinity midfielder, who drilled a low shot into the bottom corner. Ashton pushed for an equaliser in the closing stages and twice went close from set pieces, but Gainsborough held firm to claim a thoroughly deserved away victory.

Gainsborough Trinity will be delighted with the character shown in turning the game around, while Ashton United must quickly address their lack of cutting edge in front of goal. The result leaves Trinity well placed in the early Northern Premier League standings and gives their travelling supporters plenty to cheer about.
