North Ferriby United 0-3 Matlock Town: Clinical away display secures dominant win

Matlock Town produced a ruthless away performance to beat North Ferriby United 3-0 in English Northern League Division One on Wednesday 16 September 2026, claiming all three points with a controlled and confident display.

The visitors were sharper in both boxes, taking their chances efficiently while keeping a clean sheet at the other end. For North Ferriby United, it was a difficult evening against an opponent that punished every mistake.

Match overview

Matlock Town started strongly and never really relinquished control. They moved the ball quickly through midfield, stretched North Ferriby’s defence with wide runs, and opened the scoring in the 23rd minute through Alex Byrne.

North Ferriby United tried to respond, but their attacking moves lacked a final pass. Matlock doubled their lead early in the second half when Jordan Wells finished from close range after a sustained period of pressure. The third goal arrived in the 78th minute, with Byrne adding his second of the night to put the result beyond doubt.

The home side kept working until the final whistle, but Matlock’s defensive organisation and game management were excellent. The visitors slowed the tempo when needed and looked dangerous whenever they broke forward.

Tactical story

Matlock Town’s midfield dictated the rhythm of the game. They pressed intelligently, forced North Ferriby into hurried passes, and then used the ball efficiently when they won it back. Their front players were quick to run into space, which made them a constant threat on the break.

North Ferriby United struggled to build sustained pressure. Their best spells came from set pieces and crosses into the box, but Matlock’s centre-backs dealt with the danger comfortably. As the game wore on, North Ferriby left more gaps at the back, and Matlock took full advantage.

Standout players

Alex Byrne was the clear standout with two well-taken goals, while Jordan Wells added energy and directness in the final third. Matlock’s goalkeeper also deserved credit for a composed performance and a late save that secured the clean sheet. For North Ferriby, the goalkeeper made several stops to keep the score down, but the team lacked a cutting edge.

Season impact

The victory strengthens Matlock Town’s position in the English Northern League Division One table and boosts their goal difference. It was exactly the kind of professional away performance that can define a successful season.

North Ferriby United, meanwhile, will need to regroup quickly. A 0-3 home defeat is a setback, but there is still plenty of time to correct course and find consistency in the weeks ahead.
