Mossley won a five-goal Northern League Division One thriller 3-2 against Prescot Cables on October 7, 2026, after a late goal settled a contest that swung one way and then the other. Mossley looked in command at 2-0, only for Prescot Cables to roar back level, but the home side found one final moment of quality to take all three points at Seel Park.

Match Overview

Mossley started brightly and took the game to Prescot Cables with sharp passing and aggressive pressing. The opening goal came after a sustained spell of pressure, and when a second followed before the half-hour mark, the home supporters could have been forgiven for expecting a comfortable afternoon. Prescot Cables, however, responded with character rather than collapsing.

The visitors pulled one back before half-time through a well-taken strike, and they carried that momentum into the second half. An equaliser early in the second period made it 2-2 and silenced the home crowd. Mossley had to weather a difficult spell, but a tactical switch and a renewed emphasis on wide play helped them regain control before the decisive late goal arrived.

• 14th minute – Mossley 1-0: Liam Ashworth found space at the near post and flicked home a precise cross.
• 28th minute – Mossley 2-0: Joel Mellor doubled the lead with a low drive after a quick counter-attack.

• 90th minute – Final chance: Prescot Cables sent a header wide from a late corner as Mossley held on.

Tactical Story

Mossley’s early success came from pressing Prescot Cables’ midfield and forcing turnovers in advanced areas. The two-goal lead was built on quick transitions, with Ashworth and Mellor proving difficult to handle. Prescot Cables adjusted by dropping one midfielder deeper and using the flanks to bypass Mossley’s press, which brought them back into the match.

After the equaliser, Mossley’s manager moved to a more compact shape and instructed his full-backs to stay disciplined. That limited Prescot’s counter-attacking chances and allowed Mossley to finish the game on the front foot. The winning goal came from exactly the kind of patient build-up play that had been missing during their difficult spell.

Standout Players

Liam Ashworth was the obvious hero with two goals, including the late winner. Joel Mellor’s energy and direct running caused problems throughout, while Mossley’s goalkeeper made two important saves in the second half. For Prescot Cables, Callum Dwyer and Ben Rutter were the standout performers, dragging their side back into a game that had seemed to be slipping away.

Season Impact

This was the kind of win that can boost a squad’s belief. Mossley showed resilience after surrendering a two-goal lead, and the three points keep them competitive in the Northern League Division One table. Prescot Cables will be disappointed to leave empty-handed, but their second-half comeback demonstrated the spirit within the group. Both sides will take lessons from a match that had almost everything.
