Matlock Town and Silsden A.F.C. shared a frenetic 2-2 draw in an English Northern League Division One encounter on Saturday evening, with both sides having spells of dominance but failing to deliver a decisive blow. The result leaves Matlock still searching for their first home win of the campaign, while Silsden extended their unbeaten run to four matches.

First-half firepowers

The hosts made a bright start on the Causeway Lane surface, and their early pressure paid off in the 19th minute. Winger Ben Storey cut inside from the left and curled a low finish beyond the reach of the Silsden goalkeeper, giving Matlock a deserved lead. However, the visitors responded well and were level within six minutes when striker Reece Dalton rose highest to meet a pinpoint corner.

The game swung again just before the break when Matlock went ahead once more through a scrappy close-range finish from striker Callum Armstrong after a goalmouth scramble. It was a lead that the home fans hoped would hold, but they were left frustrated when Silsden equalised in the 54th minute with a fine individual effort from midfielder Dan Threlfall, who danced past two challenges before slotting home.

Second-half standoff

After the equaliser, the match became an increasingly tense midfield battle. Matlock re-established territorial control and created several half-chances, but Silsden’s defence, marshalled by veteran centre-half Tom Seddon, stood firm. At the other end, Silsden threatened on the counter, with Dalton forcing a sharp save from Matlock keeper Sam Howson in the 78th minute.

The final ten minutes saw both teams settle for a share of the spoils, with neither goalkeeper seriously tested again. It was an entertaining spectacle for the travelling neutral, but Matlock manager David Bradley will feel his side let two points slip against a well-organised Silsden outfit.

Standings impact

The draw leaves Matlock Town in mid-table, but they are still remarkably close to the promotion-chasing pack given the compact nature of the division. Silsden, meanwhile, continue to look like a difficult side to beat and have lost only once in their last seven league outings.
