Mossley and Nantwich Town battled to a 1-1 stalemate at Seel Park on Saturday, a result that did little to separate the evenly matched sides in English Northern League Division One. Both goals arrived in the space of six first-half minutes, and neither outfit could find a winner despite a determined second-half display.

Early exchanges

The opening half-hour was characterised by tight marking and clear-cut chances at a premium. Nantwich began to take control on the flanks, but Mossley's backline remained alert. The breakthrough finally arrived in the 34th minute when Matty Fearn clipped a measured cross to the far post for Sam Armstrong to head past the Nantwich keeper. It was a deserved opener for the home side, who had grown into the game.

Nantwich's response was swift and clinical. Just four minutes later, a quickly worked free-kick played in forward Jamie Whitmore, who had the time and composure to sweep the ball beyond Mossley's custodian. The visitors' equaliser took the sting out of the home crowd and left the game finely poised at half-time.

Second-half pressure without reward

Mossley pushed forward with greater urgency after the break, piling crosses into the Nantwich box. However, the visitors' central defensive pairing of Danny Bishop and Liam Powys produced a string of solid clearances. Midfielder Max Heaton also tested the Nantwich goalkeeper from distance in the 67th minute, drawing a solid save.

As the game wore on, Nantwich were content to hold possession and frustrate Mossley, occasionally breaking away through Whitmore. The home side should have won it in the final minute when a corner fell to substitute Joe Kennelly, but his close-range effort sailed narrowly over the crossbar.

What it means

Despite the disappointment of not banking maximum points, Mossley's undefeated start to the campaign continues, and they remain within touching distance of the early leaders. Nantwich, too, can be satisfied with their resilience on the road – a trait that will serve them well in a long and demanding Northern League Division One season.
