Hartlepool United 0-1 Tamworth: Creaney Stuns Hartlepool at Victoria Park

Tamworth pulled off a smash-and-grab 1-0 victory at Hartlepool United in the English National League on Saturday, 3 October 2026, with Dan Creaney scoring the only goal of the game in the 72nd minute. Hartlepool dominated possession and created the better chances, but they were left to rue a lack of ruthlessness in front of goal.

The result is a significant one for Tamworth, who showed resilience, organisation, and no small amount of bravery to leave Victoria Park with all three points. For Hartlepool, it was a frustrating night that highlighted the fine margins in the National League.

Match Overview

Hartlepool started strongly and controlled the opening half-hour. Their midfield pressed high, won the ball back quickly, and supplied a steady stream of crosses into the Tamworth box. The visitors defended with concentration, blocking shots and clearing their lines whenever danger appeared.

Despite Hartlepool's dominance, the best chance of the first half fell to Tamworth on the counter-attack. A quick break ended with a shot from the edge of the box that flew just wide. That warning was not heeded, and Tamworth grew in belief as the game wore on.

The decisive moment arrived in the 72nd minute. Dan Creaney found a pocket of space between Hartlepool's centre-backs, received a clever pass, and slotted the ball low past the goalkeeper. Hartlepool threw bodies forward in the final 15 minutes, but Tamworth's goalkeeper produced two excellent saves and the defence threw themselves in front of everything.

Key Moments

• 21' – Hartlepool chance: A header from a corner is cleared off the line by a Tamworth defender.
• 39' – Tamworth warning: A counter-attack ends with a shot flashing wide of the Hartlepool post.
• 72' – Tamworth 1-0: Dan Creaney finds space between the centre-backs and finishes low into the corner.
• 84' – Brilliant save: Tamworth's goalkeeper tips a dipping effort over the crossbar.
• 90+5' – Final block: A last-ditch challenge denies Hartlepool a dramatic equaliser.

Tactical Story

Hartlepool played with a high tempo and finished with a clear advantage in shots and possession. Their full-backs pushed high and the wingers stayed wide, but Tamworth's back four defended the box superbly. The visitors were happy to concede territory and hit on the break, and that plan worked perfectly for the winning goal.

Tamworth's midfield sat deep and narrowed the passing lanes, forcing Hartlepool into crosses rather than cut-backs. When Hartlepool did find space, the final ball was often rushed or blocked. It was a textbook away performance in the National League: absorb pressure, stay compact, and take the one big chance when it arrives.

Standout Players

Dan Creaney was the match-winner for Tamworth, showing composure with his finish and intelligence with his movement. Tamworth's goalkeeper was outstanding in the closing stages, while their captain organised the defence brilliantly. For Hartlepool, the midfield trio kept the team moving forward, but the forwards could not find the finishing touch.

National League Table Impact

Tamworth's victory gives them a valuable boost in the early-season standings and proves they can compete away from home against one of the division's bigger clubs. Hartlepool remain in a promising position overall, but this is a result that will frustrate their manager and supporters.

The English National League season is long, and dropped points at home can prove costly in the race for promotion or playoff places. Hartlepool must sharpen their finishing quickly, while Tamworth will take huge confidence from a disciplined and ultimately decisive performance at Victoria Park.
