Rugby Borough Women produced a dominant home display to beat Sporting Khalsa Women 3-0 in the English FA Women’s Cup on 25 October 2026. The hosts scored early, controlled possession for long periods and added two more goals after the break to secure a comfortable place in the next round.

Match overview

Rugby Borough Women were assertive from the opening minutes. They pressed high, won the ball back quickly and moved it wide to create space for crosses into the box. The early goal gave them a lead to protect, but rather than sitting back, Rugby Borough kept pushing for more and were rewarded with a commanding second-half performance.

Sporting Khalsa Women worked hard and tried to stay compact, but they were often pinned deep by Rugby Borough’s relentless pressure. Their best moments came from counter-attacks and set pieces, yet the final ball was lacking. Once the second goal went in, the result never looked in doubt, and the third goal capped a thoroughly deserved victory.

Key moments

• 9th minute: Rugby Borough took an early lead after a quick break down the right and a composed finish at the near post.
• 28th minute: Sporting Khalsa’s goalkeeper made a fine save to deny the hosts a second goal.
• 48th minute: Rugby Borough doubled their advantage with a header from a well-delivered corner.
• 63rd minute: The third goal arrived after a neat passing move, finished with a low strike from the edge of the box.
• 81st minute: Sporting Khalsa forced a rare chance, but the shot was blocked by a committed Rugby Borough defender.

Tactical story

Rugby Borough’s high press set the tone. Their midfielders pushed up aggressively, forcing Sporting Khalsa into hurried passes and creating turnovers in dangerous areas. The wide players stayed high and wide, stretching the defence and allowing the full-backs to overlap. That constant width was the source of several chances, including the opening goal.

Sporting Khalsa tried to defend in a narrow block and hit on the break, but they struggled to keep possession long enough to relieve pressure. When they did get forward, Rugby Borough’s centre-backs were dominant in the air and quick to cover behind. The home side’s ability to win second balls in midfield ensured the game was played almost entirely in Sporting Khalsa’s half.

Standout players

Rugby Borough’s right winger was a constant threat, beating her marker repeatedly and delivering dangerous crosses. The central midfielder controlled the tempo and won several important duels, while the centre-forward led the line with intelligence and physicality. For Sporting Khalsa, their goalkeeper made a string of saves to keep the score down, and their captain never stopped organising those around her.

What it means

The victory gives Rugby Borough Women a strong platform for the next round and underlines their attacking potential. A clean sheet will also please the coaching staff, especially after such a dominant team performance. Sporting Khalsa Women will return to league action looking to tighten up defensively and find more composure in possession, but they can take credit for continuing to battle until the final whistle.
