Nottingham Trent Women and Loughborough Lightning Women played out a compelling 0-0 draw in the English FA Women’s Cup on 25 October 2026, with both defences holding firm in an evenly matched contest.

The late-evening kick-off gave the tie a proper cup-night atmosphere, and the East Midlands rivals produced a game full of energy, tactical discipline and no little tension. Clear-cut chances were rare, but the commitment and organisation on show made it an absorbing watch.

Match overview

Nottingham Trent settled first, working the ball through midfield and looking to release their wide players into space. Loughborough Lightning responded with a compact shape and a willingness to counter at speed, ensuring the home side could never fully commit numbers forward. The first half was a study in containment: tackles were timed well, second balls were contested fiercely, and both goalkeepers were protected by disciplined back lines.

After the break the game opened slightly. Loughborough found more joy down the flanks, while Nottingham Trent pushed their full-backs higher in search of an overlap. Still, the final ball eluded both teams, and the scoreline remained untouched.

Key moments

• Nottingham Trent’s goalkeeper produced a sharp low save early in the second half after a quick Loughborough break.
• A Loughborough centre-back made a crucial clearance at the back post from a dangerous Trent corner.
• Trent’s midfielder headed narrowly wide from another set piece as the home side pressed for the opener.
• In the closing minutes, a Loughborough substitute shot over from the edge of the box after a well-worked counter.

Tactical story

Nottingham Trent’s 4-2-3-1 looked to dominate possession through the middle, with the midfield pair screening the back four and allowing the advanced line to rotate. Loughborough Lightning set up in a disciplined 4-4-2, often dropping into a mid-block that invited pressure before springing forward. The tactical battle was fought largely in central areas, where neither team allowed the other to settle.

Set pieces became the most likely source of a breakthrough. Both sides delivered with purpose, but the aerial defending was excellent. The match became a test of patience, and neither team lost composure.

Standout performers

The Nottingham Trent goalkeeper was calm and commanding, claiming crosses and making the one important save required. Loughborough’s central defender read the game superbly, stepping out to intercept and covering behind when Trent looked to play through. In midfield, both captains set the tone with relentless pressing and intelligent positioning.

What the result means

A clean sheet is a valuable takeaway for both camps. Nottingham Trent showed they can control long spells without leaving themselves exposed, while Loughborough proved they can defend resolutely and threaten on the counter. In cup football, that kind of resilience matters, and both teams will leave with reasons for encouragement despite the goalless scoreline.
