The match produced five goals, several momentum shifts and a finish that left the home supporters celebrating a hard-fought cup victory.

FA Trophy football often delivers drama, and this tie was no exception. Workington showed attacking ambition throughout, while Cleethorpes Town responded with character and twice fought their way back into the game before the hosts finally broke through.

Match Overview

Workington started brightly and took the game to their opponents, using the width of the pitch to stretch Cleethorpes Town’s defence. The early pressure brought rewards when the hosts opened the scoring, finishing off a patient move with a confident strike.

Cleethorpes responded well. Rather than sitting back, they pushed more players forward and found an equaliser as the game opened up. The visitors’ goal gave them belief, and for a spell they looked the more likely side to take control.

Workington regained the lead before half-time, restoring their advantage at a crucial moment. But Cleethorpes refused to go away and equalised again in the second half, setting up a tense finale that was ultimately decided by Workington’s late push.

Tactical Story

Workington’s game plan was built on intensity and quick attacking transitions. They looked to win the ball back high and move it forward quickly, particularly through the wide areas. That approach created chances but also left space for Cleethorpes to exploit when they broke forward.

Cleethorpes Town were at their best when they played direct and got runners beyond the Workington defence. Their equalisers came from moments when they refused to let the game drift, and their willingness to commit bodies forward made the tie a genuine spectacle. In the end, though, Workington’s ability to raise the tempo one more time proved decisive.

Standout Performers

Workington’s attacking players were central to the win, with their movement and link-up play causing problems all evening. The midfield also played a key role in driving the team forward and sustaining pressure during the crucial late spell.

Cleethorpes Town could take pride in their resilience. Their forward line worked tirelessly, and the midfield competed well for long periods. The visiting goalkeeper also made important saves, even though they were ultimately beaten three times in a difficult away tie.

What the Result Means

The win keeps Workington’s FA Trophy hopes alive and gives the squad a timely boost. Cup runs can build momentum, and the manner of this victory — recovering from setbacks to win late — will be especially satisfying for the coaching staff.

For Cleethorpes Town, the defeat is a tough one to take after twice fighting back level. However, the performance showed plenty of character and attacking quality. They will now turn their attention to league matters, while Workington look ahead to the next round with renewed belief.
