Stamford A.F.C. 1-2 Loughborough University: University Side Stun Daniels in FA Trophy

Loughborough University produced a memorable FA Trophy upset on Saturday, 26 September 2026, coming from behind to beat Stamford A.F.C. 2-1 at the Zeeco Stadium. The university side, cheered on by a lively travelling support, scored twice in the second half to knock out higher-ranked opposition and book their place in the next round.

Stamford, known as the Daniels, started the game as favourites and took an early lead. But Loughborough grew in confidence as the match wore on, and their fitness and tactical discipline eventually told. It was a result that underlined the magic of the FA Trophy, where university teams and non-league giants can meet on equal terms.

Match overview

The home side began on the front foot, pressing high and forcing Loughborough into early mistakes. Stamford’s midfield found space between the lines, and they created two good chances inside the first 15 minutes. The breakthrough arrived in the 22nd minute when Jordan Cooke latched onto a through ball, rounded the goalkeeper and slotted into an empty net. It was a clinical finish from the Daniels’ top scorer.

Loughborough responded well. Their captain, Ben Okafor, began to dictate play from deep, and the university side started to keep the ball for longer periods. They equalised four minutes before half-time when Okafor himself arrived late in the box to convert a low cross from the right. Stamford’s defenders appealed for offside, but the goal stood.

Key moments

• 22nd minute – Stamford take the lead: Jordan Cooke raced onto a defence-splitting pass and finished calmly past the goalkeeper.
• 41st minute – Loughborough equalise: Ben Okafor timed his run perfectly to meet a cross and side-foot home from eight yards.
• 58th minute – Stamford hit the post: A curling free-kick from Cooke beat the goalkeeper but cannoned back off the upright.
• 78th minute – Loughborough score the winner: Sam Whitfield collected the ball on the edge of the box, shifted it onto his left foot and curled a wonderful effort into the top corner.
• 90+2 minutes – Late scare for Loughborough: Stamford threw everyone forward, but a goal-line clearance from defender Josh Melling preserved the university side’s lead.

Tactical story

Stamford lined up in a 4-3-3 and looked to overwhelm Loughborough with early crosses and long balls into the channels. It worked for the first half-hour, but Loughborough’s back four adjusted, dropping deeper and denying space in behind. The university team then began to play out from the back, using Okafor as a deep-lying playmaker.

In the second half, Loughborough’s fitness became a factor. They pressed Stamford’s midfielders relentlessly, forcing turnovers in dangerous areas. The winning goal came from exactly that kind of pressure, with Whitfield pouncing on a loose ball and producing a moment of real quality. Stamford pushed for an equaliser but found Loughborough’s defence resolute.

Standout players

Ben Okafor was the game’s outstanding player, scoring one and creating several others. Sam Whitfield’s winner was a moment of individual brilliance, while goalkeeper Alex Reid made important saves at 1-1. For Stamford, Jordan Cooke was a constant threat and his first-half goal was superbly taken. Defender Ryan Hall won several aerial duels but could not prevent the comeback.

What the result means

Loughborough University advance to the next round of the FA Trophy, where they will await the draw. For Stamford A.F.C., it is a disappointing early exit from a competition they had hoped to progress in. The Daniels will now focus on their league campaign, while Loughborough will celebrate one of the biggest results in their recent history.

The FA Trophy continues to deliver stories like this, and Loughborough’s players and supporters will remember this trip to the Zeeco Stadium for a long time.
