Gloucester City came from behind to beat Redditch United 2-1 in their FA Trophy encounter at the Valley Stadium, producing a composed second-half display to book their place in the next round. Redditch started brightly and took an early lead, but Gloucester's response was measured and ultimately decisive.

Match overview

The hosts made the brighter start and were rewarded on 18 minutes when Jake Evans found space inside the box and converted from close range. Redditch's lead gave them confidence, but Gloucester City gradually settled into the game and began to control possession in midfield.

The equaliser arrived six minutes before half-time. Kieran Phillips received the ball on the edge of the area, shifted it onto his stronger foot and curled a fine effort beyond the goalkeeper. That goal changed the mood of the tie, and Gloucester came out after the break looking the more likely side to score next.

The winner came on 72 minutes when Liam Armstrong arrived late in the box to meet a low cross and guide the ball home. Redditch pushed for a leveller in the final stages and forced a few nervous moments, but Gloucester defended their lead with maturity and saw the game out.

Tactical story

Redditch's early energy unsettled Gloucester, but the visitors adjusted by squeezing the midfield and forcing their hosts into longer passes. Gloucester's wide players began to find more space, and their willingness to attack the box from deeper positions created the winning goal. Redditch defended valiantly, but once they were forced to chase the game, gaps appeared between their midfield and defence.

Standout performers

Phillips was central to Gloucester's comeback, linking play and scoring the crucial equaliser. Armstrong's late run and finish proved the difference, while the Gloucester goalkeeper made an important save late on. For Redditch, Evans took his goal well and remained a threat on the break, but the home side could not find a second spark in the final third.

What it means

Gloucester City move into the next round with a hard-fought away win that will boost confidence. Redditch United are left to reflect on a promising start that slipped away, and they will now turn their attention to league matters as they look to build consistency.
