Stourbridge secured a professional 2-0 away win over Loughborough University in the English FA Trophy, combining defensive discipline with two well-timed goals to book their place in the next round.

Loughborough University saw plenty of the ball, especially in the first half, but struggled to turn possession into clear chances. Stourbridge stayed compact, defended their box well and punished their hosts with decisive moments at the other end.

Match overview

The home side started with intent, moving the ball quickly through midfield and looking to use the width of the pitch. Stourbridge were content to defend in a mid-block and wait for turnovers, and that strategy worked well as Loughborough’s final pass repeatedly went astray.

Stourbridge took the lead in the 23rd minute when Alex Nicholls reacted quickest to a loose ball in the box and forced it over the line from close range. The goal changed the rhythm of the match. Loughborough continued to probe, but Stourbridge’s back four held their shape and limited space around the penalty area.

The visitors doubled their advantage in the 64th minute. A quick counter-attack ended with Ben Hughes driving into the box and finishing low across the goalkeeper. Loughborough pushed more players forward in the final 20 minutes, but Stourbridge managed the game calmly and kept a deserved clean sheet.

Key moments

• 23rd minute: Alex Nicholls scores from close range after a scramble in the box.
• 38th minute: Stourbridge’s goalkeeper makes a strong save to preserve the lead.
• 64th minute: Ben Hughes finishes a swift counter-attack to make it 2-0.
• 79th minute: Loughborough University head a corner wide as they search for a response.
• 90th minute: Stourbridge clear the final danger and seal the clean sheet.

Tactical story

Stourbridge’s approach was built on patience and organisation. They allowed Loughborough University to have possession in harmless areas, then looked to win the ball back in midfield and attack quickly. The front two worked hard to press the centre-backs when the opportunity arose, but the team’s overall discipline was the key to the result.

Loughborough University moved the ball well at times but lacked a cutting edge in the final third. Their crosses were well defended, and their attempts from distance rarely troubled the goalkeeper. Stourbridge, by contrast, were efficient in front of goal and defended their lead with maturity.

Standout players

Alex Nicholls set Stourbridge on their way with an alert finish and led the line with intelligence. Ben Hughes added the crucial second goal and carried a threat on the break. At the other end, Stourbridge’s goalkeeper produced an important first-half save and commanded his area well to secure the clean sheet.

What the result means

The 2-0 win gives Stourbridge a solid platform for the next round and another encouraging away performance in knockout football. Clean sheets are especially valuable in cup ties, and their ability to absorb pressure before striking decisively will serve them well. Loughborough University exit with credit for their possession play but will know that greater penetration in the final third is needed.
