Waltham Abbey produced a superb away performance to win a five-goal English FA Trophy tie at Hastings United, triumphing 3-2 after a late winner settled a breathless contest.

Hastings United twice threatened to take control of the tie, but Waltham Abbey responded with character and quality each time before finding the decisive goal in the closing stages. The result rewards a bold attacking display and sends the visitors through at the expense of their higher-ranked hosts.

Match overview

Hastings United began brightly and took the lead in the 14th minute when Charlie Page converted from close range after a spell of sustained pressure. The home side looked comfortable for a spell, but Waltham Abbey grew into the game and equalised in the 31st minute through Theo Grant, who cut in from the right and curled a fine effort into the far corner.

Hastings restored their lead four minutes after the restart when Ollie Ryan finished a quick move down the left. Waltham Abbey refused to fold, though, and equalised for a second time in the 67th minute. Sam Weller arrived at the back post to turn in a low cross and set up a tense final 20 minutes.

The winner came in the 88th minute. Theo Grant, who had been a constant outlet on the right, drove at the Hastings defence before slipping a pass into the box. A clever flick released the forward, and the finish was calm and decisive, sparking wild celebrations among the travelling supporters.

Tactical story

Hastings United looked to dominate the ball and create overloads down the left, where their full-back and winger combined well in the first half. Waltham Abbey initially struggled to contain those runs but adjusted by dropping their midfield slightly deeper and protecting the wide areas with more discipline after the break.

The visitors’ own attacking plan was built on quick transitions and getting their wide players into one-on-one situations. That approach paid off repeatedly, especially through Theo Grant, whose direct running caused problems all afternoon. Hastings created enough chances to win the tie, but Waltham Abbey’s finishing in the key moments proved superior.

Standout players

Theo Grant was the difference-maker for Waltham Abbey with a goal and a decisive assist in the closing stages. Sam Weller also delivered an important equaliser and worked hard defensively on the flank. For Hastings United, Charlie Page and Ollie Ryan both took their goals well, but the home side will rue their failure to protect the lead twice.

What the result means

Waltham Abbey progress with a memorable away scalp and plenty of belief after scoring three times against strong opposition. The FA Trophy rewards teams who can handle knockout pressure, and this performance showed real resilience. Hastings United exit disappointed but will take encouragement from their attacking play as they return focus to the league.
