Curzon Ashton 3-1 Stalybridge Celtic — Curzon Ashton booked their place in the next round of the English FA Trophy with a composed 3-1 victory over local rivals Stalybridge Celtic, turning a tense derby into a controlled second-half display at the Tameside Stadium.

A derby with plenty riding on it

FA Trophy ties between neighbours always carry extra weight, and this one was no different. Curzon Ashton, operating higher up the non-league pyramid, went in as favourites, but Stalybridge Celtic arrived with the freedom of an underdog and the knowledge that a cup upset against familiar opposition would be remembered for years.

The opening exchanges reflected that dynamic. Celtic pressed high, snapping into challenges in midfield and forcing Curzon into a handful of hurried clearances. The hosts, though, gradually found their rhythm, using the width of the pitch to stretch a compact back line and working the ball into the channels behind the full-backs.

How the match unfolded

• First half: Curzon took the lead after a patient passing move down the right ended with a low cross converted at the near post, before Celtic responded with a well-taken equaliser from a set piece.
• Second half: The hosts regained control almost immediately after the restart, scoring from a quickly taken throw-in that caught Celtic's defence napping.
• Late on: A third goal on the counter-attack sealed the tie, with Curzon's substitute forward finishing calmly one-on-one.

Tactical story

Curzon's midfield trio were the difference. By winning second balls and recycling possession quickly, they denied Stalybridge the sustained spells of pressure that had made the first half uncomfortable. The visitors' back four defended manfully for long periods but were repeatedly dragged out of shape by Curzon's rotation between the lines.

Stalybridge's best moments came from dead balls, where their height and delivery caused genuine problems. Once Curzon tightened their marking inside the six-yard box, that avenue narrowed and the game tilted firmly in the home side's favour.

Standout performers

Curzon's captain drove the tempo from central midfield, breaking up play and dictating the direction of attacks, while the wide players consistently beat their markers in one-on-one situations. For Stalybridge, the goalkeeper kept the scoreline respectable with two excellent saves either side of the interval, and the lone striker worked tirelessly with limited service.

What it means

The win keeps Curzon Ashton's Trophy campaign alive and adds momentum to their season, while the manner of the performance — patient, disciplined, ruthless on the break — will please the coaching staff. For Stalybridge Celtic, the exit is a disappointment, but the display offered encouragement: they competed for long spells against higher-ranked opposition and will take lessons into their league fixtures.

Cup runs at this level are built on exactly the kind of professional, unglamorous efficiency Curzon showed here — and on this evidence, they will fancy their chances in the next round.
