Sheffield Wednesday produced a dominant attacking display to thrash AFC Wimbledon 5-0 at Hillsborough in EFL League One on Saturday 17 October 2026, with Josh Windass scoring a hat-trick in a one-sided contest.

Match overview

Wednesday were relentless from the first whistle, pressing AFC Wimbledon into mistakes and moving the ball quickly through midfield. The hosts opened the scoring inside the opening quarter of an hour and never looked back. By half-time the game was effectively over as a contest, and Wednesday added further goals after the break to complete a commanding victory.

Key moments

• 12th minute: Windass opened the scoring with a composed finish after a neat exchange on the edge of the box.
• 36th minute: Michael Smith doubled the lead with a powerful header from a left-wing cross.
• 44th minute: Windass added his second, finishing first-time after a low ball across goal.
• 58th minute: Windass completed his hat-trick with a curling effort from outside the area.
• 79th minute: Barry Bannan converted a penalty to round off the scoring.

Tactical story

Wednesday’s width and movement caused AFC Wimbledon problems throughout. The full-backs pushed high, allowing the wingers to drift inside, and the midfield trio controlled the tempo. AFC Wimbledon attempted to defend in a compact block, but they were unable to close the gaps quickly enough. Once Wednesday scored early, the visitors had to come out more, which only created more space for the hosts to exploit.

Standout players

Windass was the obvious headline act, showing sharp movement and clinical finishing for his hat-trick. Smith led the line superbly, winning aerial duels and bringing others into play. Bannan dictated the rhythm from midfield, while the Wednesday defence remained focused to secure a comfortable clean sheet.

League impact

The five-goal victory gave Sheffield Wednesday a significant boost to their goal difference and sent a warning to the rest of League One. For AFC Wimbledon, it was a chastening afternoon at one of the division’s most famous venues. They will need to regroup quickly, but Wednesday’s performance was a reminder of the quality they possess when their attacking players click.
